RE: modeltech p-47 modifacations, power and props
Paul, it looks great. I see my Magnum 91FS I bought for mine is now looking kind of wimpy!
Why not remove the muffler and run a straight pipe? Four strokes are so quiet anyway... |

Here is my Modeltech P-47. Recovered it with Worldtex fabric. This is my first time covering a plane. Couldn't believe how easy it is to use compared to Ultacote. Tail is Ultracote since Worldtex doesn't offer the checkered pattern. Used Lusterkote clearcoat. Engine is an OS .91 four-stroke mounted inverted with a Slimeline pitts. Dummy engine is from Frank Tiano Enterprises. So far am going with the stock retracts. Anybody know anything about RC Gator retracts? They look pretty good. Haven't flown it yet. Have a few things still to do to it.

Dan, the thunderbolt looks great! Give us some more details. Is this a copy of a particular full scale plane?

Scott- Here's a pic of the plane I saw at a local giant-scale fly-in. I didn't talk to the guy, but I would imagine that it was based on a full-scale. Probably should think about looking it up to find out. I decided not to add the checkering on the cowl to keep it a little simpler. I recovered it because I wasn't happy with the glossy look of the plane's covering. I have always been an arf guy and had never tried anything like this. I think it turned out pretty good. Gonna add some machine guns also. The cowl I steel wooled it good and then used Ultracote primer and paint. The yellow stripe is just Ultracote pin striping. I have pushrods for the engine which really would of brought the engine to life, but I would of had to grind a good 1/8 in off the engine thickness and I dont have a table-top belt sander. Engine is a pretty strong resin. The red stripes you see on the cowl is covering holes from when I mounted the cowl crooked. So as you can see, I am no pro. Looks like I am also gonna need about 10 oz. to balance. Debating on wheather to go with an on-board glow so it would be one less hole in the cowl. Servo's are JR 537's from my new JR 6102 radio. Its an awesome radio. Does a whole lot more than I need.

I am seriously considering stripping mine for a different look. where can I get free photos and other documentation for my model.

RE: modeltech p-47 modifacations, power and props
Just do a Google search for P-47 and see what comes up. Look for the Fighter Groups that used them and go to their web site for pictures. If you have a certain one in mind the search will be easier.
Here are some links I used: http://www.web-birds.com/15th/325/325th.htm http://www.littlefriends.co.uk/353rdfg-gallery.jsp http://www.largescaleplanes.com/Work...nd/p47/P47.htm http://modelingmadness.com/scotts/al...7drpreview.htm http://www.master194.com/maquettes/1/maq_p-47-d.htm http://www.deltaaviation.co.uk/alpha...underbolt.html Some of those links are plastic model sites and that is where I got my instrument panel. I just copied the panel picture to some photo paper and it looks great! Paul www.rcwarbirds.com |

RE: modeltech p-47 modifacations, power and props
I have a page up now showing how to make a full cocpit and sliding canopy for this plane. I will add to this as I get more finished.

Wow Paul the p-47 cockpit looks great.
I am tring to get a photo here of my pushrod modifacation. I didn't like the origional plastic rods and was having some trouble geting it to go together. Hope you all can view this it is my first photo post> Scott B. |

My photo seemed to work here is the prop. these three blades look lots better and seem to be very efficient.

RE: modeltech p-47 modifacations, power and props
Those pushrods look much better and the three blade is the only way to fly.

I though you guys might like to see how I handled the gear on my Modeltech P-47. I bought some plastic wheel wells from Horizon for the Hanger 9 P-51, since I needed to be able to install some BIG wheels to fly off the rough grass at Hidden Valley Field in St. Croix, USVI. I used the Robart 609HD 85's and I must say that they have too much end play for my liking. I opened up the cases and added a thin plastic shim on the bottom of the case and it worked great? Tighened them right up!! I used 3" wheels but you can go up to 3 1/2" and they will fit!! Had to cut things up to fit the wheel wells but they get in without cutting major spars. I reinforced where necessary with 1/16" ply. I wanted to be able to get at the retract mechanism so I screwed down the covers. This was my first retract installation, as well as my first scale warbird. Haven't flown it yet, and I am breaking in a TT 91 to power the beast. I am going to try a four blade prop. I wasn't really impressed with the Modeltech P-47 ARF. The wing fairing design is a joke. The wing fit POORLY in the wing saddle among other things. It finally went together but I was dissapointed in the quality after all the advertising propoganda. Guess I expect to much for real money!

RE: modeltech p-47 modifacations, power and props
bfcbfc: I would put an extra wheel collar right where the bend in the wire is. Just for redundancy.
What size prop and engine are you using again? viflyer: your gear mod looks good! About the fairing, most have not done it according to Modeltech's method but instead attached it to the fuselage. Did you do that? |
RE: modeltech p-47 modifacations, power and props
I started on my Model Tech P-47 this afternoon. Got all the parts out of the box and started on the wrinkles in the covering. It's smoothing out nicely. So far I have the tail and fuselage done. That took about 3 hours as I go over every square inch with the iron and work it till the bubbles and wrinkles disappear.

Just ran into a snag. The belly pan has a 3/16" gap in the center. If I sand it down to fit, it will be 3/16" to low in the front and back. I am going to try to exchange it for another and hope it fits better and that this one was just a bad example.
If I have to make do, I was thinking of what I should do? Add some balsa to it and sand it down? Re-cover it or just paint it? |
RE: modeltech p-47 modifacations, power and props
I had trouble with the belly pan being to long so it wouldn't fit down flush with the fuselage. In your case try squeezing the sides together. As you push each side in, the curve will fit to the fuselage. It worked for me.
|
RE: modeltech p-47 modifacations, power and props
Be careful when getting the bubbles out. This crap covering does not like high heat and melts very fast.. Ive had mine a year and a handful of good flights but I think I will recover just because. I had to squeeze my pan for a flush fit and put pins along the sides to keep it inplace while it cured.
|
RE: modeltech p-47 modifacations, power and props
Thanks for the tip. I'm going to try squeezing it in.
As for the covering, I got 99.9% of it smoothed out without a hitch using my iron but when I was going over one aileron with my blowtorch...oops I mean heat gun I melted a hole in it. :D |
RE: modeltech p-47 modifacations, power and props
THAT'S A HOT TIP!! THANKS GUYS!!
I just squeezed in the sides and it mates up nicely! Thank you Thank you :D |
RE: modeltech p-47 modifacations, power and props
I bought two Graupner 3-blade props to run on my new RCV 91CD and my TT 91. When I received the 12x8's I found that they were a loose fit on the 5/16" shaft. Has anyone shimmed out to make them fit? Some kind of tape will probably work but I hate doing it.
I don't know if the amount of slop without shimming is enought to unbalance a three blade prop at 4stroke RPM. |
RE: modeltech p-47 modifacations, power and props
viflyer, it will definitely vibrate more. I would shim it. But not tape. Go get some thin brass sheet from your local hobby store and cut a strip that you can wind around the crankshaft to take up the slack. K&S Metals is usally the type of stock sold at hobby shops near where I live.

Right. I sqeezed the sides in and it fit well. So I cut two strips of plywood and glued them inside the belly pan to permanently hold it in a squeezed position. That way, I didn't have to pin it like BoGo while gluing it. Here is a pic of the inner braces I made, as well as the belly pan resting on the wing after gluing the braces in. This is before I did the final trim sanding to eliminate the gaps. Much better!
RCU is wonderful! What a great resource of knowledge. :) I did not take a pic yet of the belley pan after sanding and gluing onto the wing. Here is a tip I can offer: the directions say to be careful not to get epoxy into the wing saddle when gluing the belly pan on. Yep, don't want to epoxy the wing to the fuse! I laid strips of wax paper in the wing saddle between the wing and fuse and it worked like a charm. |
