RE: CMP Hellcat

RICHARD,I HAVE A SET OF DARRELS NEW RETRACTS FOR THE CMP F6F.THEY HAVE NO TOE IN ADJUSTMENT EITHER SO DOES THIS MEAN THEY WILL CAUSE THE PLANE TO NOSE OVER ALL THE TIME OR WHAT WILL CAUSE THIS HAPPEN.I THOUGH THESE WERE THE BEST ON THE MARKET.
THANKS

RE: CMP Hellcat

Does your retracts have a forward rake when installed? Instead of 90 deg angle maybe 100 or so. Thanks Rich

Richard L. 02-16-2005 07:35 PM

RE: CMP Hellcat

No, toe-in doesn't necessarily cause the plane to nose over on landing. If you are using cheap wheels that have play in them, then the front of the wheels will angle out on landing, creating a slight toe out. Slight toe out will increase the chance of nosing over, that's all.

RE: CMP Hellcat

These retracts have more than enough forward rake when installed. They are 100° retracts.

Below are three top views showing three different toe-in angles. I don't think 1 degree will be enough. Either 1.5 or 2 degrees would work.

Edit: added arrow to each picture

Richard, I'm not sure if it's the illusion of the photo examples, but isn't toe-in or toe-out from front to back of the wheel. From the look of your pictures, it looks like you're illustrating toe-in as an angle from top-to-bottom of the wheel?

RE: CMP Hellcat

Sorry, those are top views. You are looking straight down at the wheels from above. The front of the plane is at the top of each picture. I will draw in arrows.

Richard How do you think the cat would fly with a Magnum 91 FS.? I know I will have to add nose weight. Thanks Rich

Richard L. 02-20-2005 08:49 PM

RE: CMP Hellcat

It will fly scale with a Magnum 91FS with no power in reserve. You won't be able to do a big loop with it. Keep in mind that the Hellcat is king in the Pacific.

It is amazing how people will blame a engine manufacture for their plane crashing! Saito only produces four stroke engines and it is hard for me to believe that they don't know how to properly build a four stroke engine. I have had many of their engines over the past ten years and have yet to loose a plane because of the engine being a Saito. A very foolish statement to make in my opinion. Is their a engine manufacture that gurantees their engines to never fail? I sure would not fly a airplane with the engine not running correctly. You are just asking for trouble. Would you get in a airplane knowing that the engine is not running correctly?

Richard, Sorry to hear about your Hellcat. Saitos can be a bear to adjust at times. I had three deadsticks on my GP Spacewearker until am friend adjuusted the low end, Saito .91. He said I had to lean . It ran fine while on the ground but once airborne it would die. I was lucky I only bent the gear and broke a prop on each deadstick. I had a Saito .50 that I was running real rich to break it in and was flying it in a Tiger Moth and we couldn't get it to lean out at all. The low end was so rich that I had little or no high end adjustment. The gap on the spray bar was supposed to be one mil I believe mine was more like a 1/16 of an inch. I never have had the same problems with any of my OS fs engines. Set and forget

Richard to bad about your cat. Did you have to do much cutting to get your retracts to fit? Thanks Rich

Not much cutting. Only enough for the air cylinders.

Richard L.

I must make a statement that Saito has a long reputation of the "4-stroke king". I used to fly glow and I must say that they are very, very good engines. Ofcourse, they WILL have problems every now and then, like all engines do. I own a high end 2004 BMW and I will have to take to the shop every now and then. There will be times that an engine will die ( either with a cheapo or a extra high end one) and the result of a dead stick landing may result in loss of an airplane. But you cannot use that example to blame the engine and vows that you will never buy another Saito. To use that logic as you did, will deny you of the positive things that the Saito can offer you. It is like me saying that since my BMW required more shop visit in the first 2 years more than my old Saturn that I will never buy another junk BMW! To do so, I will deny all the pleasure that it has to offer. And clearly, BMW is superior than the Saturn. I know that you will not be convinced but it is not fair to label the Saito engine as sub-standard junk as you did. Respecfully yours, Dai Phan

Richard,
Dont listen to these guys, saito's are crap. What kind of shape is that saito .91 in. I'll give $20 for it. I like a good challange.
Edwin

1 -saito 1.80
4 -saito 1.20's
2 -saito .56's
1 -saito .91
1 -OS .91 FS

I agree you need to get rid of that junk satio I'll give you$25 just because I like you and don't want you to put in on another plane and crash it
That guy from texas was way to cheap at $20 take my offer
:D:D

RE: CMP Hellcat

Guys, let's stay in focus and talk about the plane. The deceased engine is now a worthless paperweight, but if you don't mind sending me money for it, then I'll be happy to ship it out :D

Richard, Did you use CJ retracts? If not what type worked best for you. Thanks.
