Looking for information concerning this AC. Did the aircraft have skinned wings or open spars with covering, also the control surfaces, fabric covered or metal skinned?

G'Day Barnyard,
The Chipmunk was all metal except the rear 2/3 of the wings was fabric covered. Also all flight controls were fabric.

Canadian Chipmunks had wings that were completly skinned with metal. British built Chipmunks had fabric on the rear 2/3 of the wing as stated by Glitch. From about the main spar back.

Are you positive about the Canadian Built Chip wings being all metal ? Check out this photo

from the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. It has fabric on the back 2/3 and a Canadian Bubble Canopy. One would assume that it's a Canadian built chip. I'm building a Dynaflite Chip and the lack of easy to find documentation is driving me nuts.

OK I goofed. Every "restored" Canadian Chipmunk I have seen has had an all metal wing, so I assumed they were built that way. I just checked my copy of, Canadian Aircraft since 1909, published by Putnam. It states "The single spar wing had a stressed-skin leading edge forming a D-spar while the rear portion of the wing was fabric covered"
Sorry to lead you down the wrong path, now I know something about Chipmunks I didn't know before.

Hope you didn't get the wrong impression, I was not trying to make you look dumb. As I said documentation has been tough to find. I was originally going to sheet and glass the wing. Then I saw some good detail shots of a wing and saw the fabric. So I then partially sheeted the wing and set it up for fabric. I wanted to make it into an early canadian model. So I freaked when I saw your post. I saw having to go and try to resheet the whole deal. Thanks for your reply and clarification, it's a relief !

No problem Spitfire, I just hope I didn't cause Barnyard any problems. The local west coast was a hive of warbird activity through the 1980's P-51's, a B25, T-28's, Harvards and more Harvards, and at least 4 Chipmunks come to mind. Every Canadian Chipmunk I have seen had a full metal wing so I thought that they were made that way,and the Brits had changed theirs to fabric covered along with all the other changes they made. There is one British Chipmunk based in Victoria, and 2 south of the boarder and the fabric wing really stands out you can't miss it.
