P38- Prototype
Originally posted by Rojeck Hey Vic, how am I suppose to pretent to work if you keep posting pics of your bird. Sung when you shipping mine Vic?:D |
Sorry about that!
I am at home today :D but work calls for me to be on Saturday :(
First FLY! Second BUILD! third WORK! we have to pay for the stuff... I think its suppose to be the other way around but I can dream... Todd, I will not make anymore until the prototype flies... plus I already have a long list of engineering notes for the next go around to make it better, I think. Vic |
P38- Prototype
so when we flying it, next weekend? :D
Understand that, build it, fly it, adjust the mold as necessay, gotta make it right first before you sell it. Looking forward to seeing it complete. |
P38- Prototype
Hey Sung, Vic is dragging his feet. Me and Ray have a plan, I am going to keep Vic busy at the field while Ray goes and steals the fuse, throws it in the back of his truck. I meet him later and we put the damn thing together as a sloper and throw it off of Pointe Ferman. ARE YOU IN? YES OR NO?
By the way have you noticed the great glider weather that we are having? Time to put away all that messy fuel and flight box and grab a sloaper and go fly.... Maybe we can sloap that dragon fly! I'll shoot that idea to Ray and see what he says! HAHAHA... |
P38- Prototype
Scott, nope, count me out I am a power guy. If you want, maybe we could stick two turbines on the puppy and see how much she'll scream. Now we are talking some serious speed. I sure hope Vic made the parts strong.

Sloper?
Scottdog, Why did I not think of making a sloper? That is a great idea :D . Stupid me had all these plans and drawings to make a wind tunnel testing unit in my backyard, while Ray's backyard is a natural wind tunnel
Sung, we can make it strong, so how may 18oz layer should I use? 5-6 should be pretty solid. Vic |
P38- Prototype
Man ohh man....
Scott, you got a better idea than I could ever of come up with. And the winds have been really good too. I am doing my best not to look at the post or his site. All of y'all did a really good job on it. I am not even gonna try to get on this long ass waiting list. But truth be known, I do want one, and make it into a Bendix Cup Racer. Ray |
Baby got wings!

Vic, that thing will look sweeeeet hanging in my shop!
Looking awesome, when i finish the current run of spit gear, i will go ahead and get back on the '38 gear..... Lenny |
Gears
Lenny, thanks... send me a rough (prototype) set of gears as soon as you can. :) . If not I might just even mount something that does not retract, just to get this proto in the air. I have no idea where to mount the gear plates, but I could leave this unmounted if need be.
Can I predict the future? I think I can see one of these hanging above your Mill and Lathe, something to inspire your gear making process, we all want you to keep producing them gears, but you can fly once in a while ;) On another note, do you have 3 available Spitfire gear available to sell? I have 3 local guys who will need them. Let me know and I will send a M.O. Thanks for your help on the spit gear and the p38. Cheers! Vic |
P38- Prototype
Hey Vic, I have a set of Century Jet gear made for the G&P sales P-38 which I purchased for this project. They need to be modified a bit in order to have the correct angles of retraction but if you want them to get the prototype flying let me know. Looks fantastic by the way!

P38- Prototype
Will this be a "one-off", or are planning to make it available as a kit in the future? Sure is sweet.
|
Kit?
More likely it will be a kit. Hopefully, it is easy to build, fly great and looks good, and and not overly expensive. But you have to paint it yourself.... but that is the FUN part :D
But there is still a lot of parts I need to make, turbo chargers teardrop scoop, gear doors etc.... Vic |

Looks great Vic! The way Scott is holding it in the first picture, it looks very light! well done! :)

Right on Vic, we are now less than two weeks away for Castle, looks like you are gonna make it. Way to go.

Hoping to have the P-38 gear done this weekend...... (after a trip to UPS this afternoon to send out a lotta stuff........)
Just "fyi" for those interested. Plan is to make a standard set, and offer a cosmetic "upgrade" kit, with scissors, the extra strut braces, maybe the shimmy-damper, etc... haven't carved it in stone yet, but looks like the set with the upgrades will still be a fair amount less than the going rate for commercial P38 gear..... that will make the initial retract cost a lot more reasonable, and offer "something extra" when the wife...i mean finances will allow the extra bucks..... and these will have the correct, odd angles, per Vics' call outs. Will try to update here monday. Lenny "shindin" Sarbin (that retract guy in Georgia) |
Thank guys! I get a lot of my motivation from this place!
From the picture with Scott (he is 6'6" tall) it weighs in at 10 lbs, without the engines and retracts and a few more servos. With the engines it weighs in at 17lbs. I am hoping to be in the 22 lbs range. This protoype is on the heavy side. I think a pair .91 2-strokes will bring it well under 20lbs. This will be my first twin airplane
Don't let me scare you but I hope to get a couple of flights on my friends Hobbico Twinstar ARF. That way I can get the feel of flying with two engines (or one engine  ). I am not the greatest flyer but if my P38 survives my flying ability, it should be okay for most. I hope to get the P38 at the Castle fly in this June 20th-22nd. Don't expect me to fly it as I usually fly my plane half a dozen times before flying at an event. Lenny, thanks for all your help on the retracts... expect your P38 in July. :D Cheers! Vic |
P38- Prototype
Vic,
Put me on the list when you start to produce a kit. I really like the size of this bird. Not to mention everything I have seen about the prototype. |
Hey Vic!
See next post for update.
