while i'am waiting for the better weather to arrive so i can paint my sist 190D and fuel proof the 109 i thought i'd start a thread on my latest build....a mick reeves 100" mossie......this was designed by John Carpenter back in the early 90's for competition use at the UK Nats.....

the kit comprises of a epoxy glass fuz (2 parts) glass nacelles and built up outer wing panels/tailplane/fin and rudder.....all up weight will be around 22/24lbs.....

at the moment i'm still pondering about what to use for power....the prototype first flew with 2 laser 90's...it flew ok but really needed something bigger....2 laser 150's were added and this made the mossie fly very well...too well by all accounts.....the ideal setup being something around the 120/125 size, however my problem is should i go electric?......anyway i can go so far with the build and then hit the crunch later.....

the kit comes with all plans/articles/scale dwgs etc.......although a lot is left up to the builder...so it's not going to be a beginers project......this will be my first twin

i've always loved the mossie...having seen the full size fly at DX some years ago......my local flying site Warboy's had mossies so did Wyton and Upwood only a stones throw away....also my mum remembers seeing one crash from Wyton just down the road where she lived and my dad rode his bike to the end of the runway at Wyton....so it only was a matter of time before i had to build one for nostalgia reasons......

parts i've been doing at work during my lunch break......rudder and fin...these are progressing fine, the rest i've started in the workshop....

the first thing to do was to clean up all the mould seams......using wet and dry and flat blocks...some filler was needed just to fill in any small holes etc left after rubbing back......the fuz comes in two halves split just behind the flaps...on the full size there is a small detail abit like a flatten sausage that runs around the fuz....this will hide the join between the parts when bolted together.....4 ....M4 bolts are used to secure the glass parts using T nuts glued onto 3mm ply rings..the parts once completed align very well....all parts glued with hyhsol.....

That looks like a great build. Who does not like a Mossi.......:D

the wing is made up of 1/8" balsa ribs and a root rib of ply, these are pinned to the plan and spars made up of 1/8" laminated balsa......these have been designed so that it's 3 ply up too rib 5..then 2 ply to rib 7 and then single to rib 13......ali wing joining tubes are also supplied, these are glued into the first 3 ribs...each rib having a ply ring to add strengh...the servo will exist in the scale position about mid way down the alerion....the mount will need some thinking about...so for now i've left this open....holes were drilled in to the ribs for servo wires...just behind the spar

3/8" balsa is added to the rear of the wing joining the flap area, 1/4" sheet is cut and glued to the alerion ribs...the mossie has quite long alerions....

top sheeting is then added...using 3/32"....the rear edge was reinforced with 1/64 ply let into the balsa...using a small sanding block against a rule to get it straight....

the wing panels go together quite quickly......did this one in a couple of hours today......will post more when i get to the next stage

started the other wing tonight.....same as the first version.....

first wing top covered...leading edge needs adding...3/8" balsa,, will do this when the other wing is at the same stage...much easier to get right when sanding 2 one after the other

wing tips...made from 2mm light ply sandwiched between 1/2" light balsa...the light ply will let me achieve a good thin edge once sanded also give the tips some protection against hager rash..light removed...once the tip has been sanded to shape a piece of model lab board will tacked in place snaded to suit the tip sections and then used to make the mould for clear plastic covers.

the fin and rudder are built on a 1/16" core...hinge points need to be cut into the cores first.....using large robart hinges......also rudder connection needs figuring out...using bent piano wire with a T piece for push pull wire system

rudder almost finished.....1/4" balsa needs adding to the inside edge of the rudder this will be shaped...bullnose fashion....trim tab removed for ease..this will be finished later.....

good luck with that build, mossies is alovely plane. Neil in the UK has built the larger MR version and amate of mine here is also building the bigger one. Shame the big one does not comes as aglass fuz too.

One point though is to add lightening holes where ever you can in the tail group, will save you lots of hassle later on with nose weight. Just ask Neil!

both wings are now at the same stage...all top balsa decking added...vertical stiffeners added to the spars.....servo plate glued into postition with hysol.....these will be left now and the tail plane/flaps/alerions will be started...leaving the sheeting off the underside of the wings will enable me to do any adjusting with the Ali wing joining tubes within the nacelles....as they need to be parrallel to each other for ease of fitting....

been working on the fin today.....halve is made up...location for carbon tubes in place.....2 are required to give strength once glued onto the fin seat on the glass fuz
