Engine selection
 
I am building a Hangar 9 - T34 Mentor and am trying to select an engine. I have a SuperTigre .51 that I was going to put in it, but have begun toying with the idea of running a four stroke. If I run the four stroke it will either be a Saito 82 Golden Knight AAC w/Muffler or a comparable Y.S. four stroke. Two questions: (1) What do you think about a four stroke instead of a two stroke? (2) Is there a comparable Y.S. engine?

Four stroke motors are nicer on the ears. You also get more torque and better transition. After my first 4-stroke I never ran a 2stroke again.

The Saito is a great pic. The 82 will have much more power than the Supertiger engine. I think YS makes a 63, which will also have great power. My choice would be the Saito because it is simple. All YS's have pumps and are a bit heavy. YS makes great motors but Saito's are an easy running and tuning engine after break-in. I have experience in both and many others.

I've got a H9 T34. Great flyer! I've got an RCV .60SP in it, and it hauls it around nicely.

The only snag with this engine, is that it requires a large diameter prop, and I've got about 1/2" ground clearance with the 13.4x13.5, 3 blade prop, and it mows a lot of grass on takeoff.

If I had it to do over, I would have used the old Enya .60X 2 stroke I have lying around. I could use a shorter 11" prop.

Although it is nice to fit the entire thing into the cowl with the RCV.

A Saito .82 will hover this thing, IMHO.
