Electric Byron F-16 Build

This is a model that I bought 10 years ago NIB never started. It has all the options that Byron offered at the time. I done the basic setup and installation but never finished (Photo 1). It will not be converted to a kero burner as I have already been down that road and am sick of all the crap that had to be taken to the field for a quick flight. I am looking at doing it in electric power as the hi-power 90/91 fan engines are NLA, or I can buy two to three flight packs for the same price. I will be replacing the elevator control with separate mini digital servos, as well as the rudder servo (also mini digital) will be fitted where the original elevator servo was installed, I am also looking at fitting the Hitec HS-125MG servos in the wings replacing all the Byron control stuff (Photo 4) The Rohm retract gear will be replaced with up to date gear that will work and won’t leak (Photo 5). Lots of other little changes we will see on the way.

Peter I will keep that in mind. A lot of stuff I will make myself. Being a retired machinest/tool maker making parts don't cost me anything other than time. If I don't do it today, I can always do it tomorrow. It may take some time as its been 6 years since I done any thing on it. Peter the elevators will be put away and will do the second set that I have and I will pick the best two out of them. Cheers |

Good to see your build here too:D look out for those HS-125MG. i discussed these with a gliding mate of mine and he said they have a shocking report on the forums. really bad centering, even the digital versions of these.... shame really, because i also wanted to use them on my Byron f-16. thank dave |

Hey Ghost, i have an Byron F-16 hanging in my family room that I did in 1990 and flew for a while. got tired of replacing head gaskets in the OS .91 and those darn header pipe connectors. I will be watching your progress with the electric change over with thoughts of doing the same with mine.

Done a bit of thinking last night(I know, it hurt)[8D] I am already changing the elevator to seperate servos, so why not loose the ailerons altogether and go with elevons. The elevators are a very large surface and I can only see that maybe the roll rate may be a bit slower. Any ideas?

I have also been toying with the idea of going just elevons, but then you loose the ability to use the aileron as flaps and then be able to slow the model down even more.... never mind the "digital, or not to digital" question that i haven't made my mind up about.

Has anyone looked at the elevator(flying stabs) to compare them. I have two sets and one set is almost 1/8" thicker than the other. I know that Byron had heaps of moulds, just wondering weather one was a mod for a weak flying surface.

I'm about to test fly my new Tam A-4 this plane will go great on E Power go search the other site in the EDF jets fourms right now Bruff is converting a byron mig I know there is a conversion for the byron fan But I'm really sold on the Schubeler Fans : http://www.schuebeler-jets.de/ I'm running the DS-94 in both of my planes and they work very good and sound really nice PM me if you need any help at all There is also a new fan called the TF 8000 it's a drop in replacment for the Byron fan but has 28 pounds of thrust it's wicked and not cheap..lol Heres a link make sure to watch the video of it in action : http://www.ductedfans.com/Turbo_Fan_...edfanscom.html Ron |

Thanks pete, you were right they are a little pricey
Looks like the few items i have put up for sale on ebay are going to be sold so i should be starting to order the bits and pieces for mine. The best prices for hitec servos are at troy built models. They have the HS-5645 digital metal geared servos for $45 if you buy a pair of them! they are .7" thick so they should fit into the wing too. that's the cheap price i normally paid for the non digital ones (HS-645). thanks dave |

I've managed to get some time with the 16 today and finished removing all the old paint. It was a fair bit of work in the end! Now i'll have to start applying the filler to all the ding and dents.
Hey Ghost, have you got retracts installed in yours? i'm trying to get my hands on a set for mine, but might just buy a set for the flymodels f-16. same sized model and the retracts, oleo's wheels and brakes come as a set and are worth about $450. I would like to know how they were originally fitted, but what i would especially like to see is how the nose wheel is mounted? do you have any pic's of your retracts installed, other than the oes post above? I've emailed iron bay about 1/2 doz times now to get a replacement canopy with no reply other thna their initial response that it would be $45 inc shipping[:@][:'(][:@] thanks dave |

The original retracts were mounted on thick wall formed aluminum brackets. The brackets were bolted in on the lower shelf of the fuse and the retracts mounted on those brackets. |

Dug the rudder out. A few dings that need repair before glassing.
Has anyone that built these models noticed that the moulded foam cores are made of different foam. Some sand easley while others are rubbery. Cheers |

Don't sheet them, They were directly covered with a low heat film in the day,(in instructions,unglassed, Black Baron or Econokote) wanted to be a bit stronger as well as not being able to get the low heat film any more.
