Which type of paint?
 

:confused: Which type of paint would flow well on my F4U Corsair? I have a paint scheme in mind however I don't know where to find paint that is glo fuel proof and will look scale like in the WWII fashion. What paints would you (the community) recommend for a three-color Pacific Theater paint job like this one in the picture? Also I’ll be using an airbrush to throw paint on the model. Thanks in advance for your help.

You might try "Perfect" paints (might be called Chevron now) for glow fuel. They have camoflage colors that are fairly accurate. The colors you want are sea blue (top), intermediate blue (sides of fuse, fin/rudder, and bottom outer wings), and insignia white (bottom of fuse, stab, and bottom inner wings). I think you thin them with mineral spirits. The Navy tri-color is my favorite warbird camo scheme. I have two big ones done in it, a Corsair and a Dauntless, but I mixed house paint for them cuz they're gas.

I use Nelson hobby paints in my airbrush. They thin with water and are fuelproof. They give a very nice finish with an airbrush. Call Jerry, he can match whatever color you want - and he's great to talk with! Nelsonhobby.com

I agree with W0mbat. I have had good luck with the Nelson paint as well.

Thanks guys for all the advise this issue. I'll run with Nelson Paints. The idea of having paint samples on the web site increases the chance for the proper color match, however I'll end up calling Jerry first! Thanks again. :) Wade Russell

Do not use the Chevron paint, it is highly over rated IMO. If money is no object, use the Nelson paint, otherwise investigate latex house paint.

I've painted a number of my warbirds with Testors Modelmaster enamels, applied decals, weathered... then locked the whole shootin'-match down with flat clear LusterKote. Very fuelproof and very accurate with the modelmaster FS colors.

A friend turned me to Rustoleum and it works for me and its fuel proof to 10 percent....

You have to mix your colors though, I color match them to the testor paint bottles... You can pick up almost any military colors in testor (model master), matching wet paint to wet paint is easier than to match a color chart.

at 2.99 per 8oz cans.. its cheap. You'll need red, yellow and blue to make the colors and adjust tone with white and black... Mix any color you want till your hearts content... You can mix insignia blue, insignia white, insignia red etc etc and it won't cost you any more... Heck if the 8oz cans are not enough, pick up the 1/4 gallon at 5.99 you might be able to paint a full size airplane for less than 50 dollars... :eek:

negative aspect is... not waterbase... you use mineral spirits (paint thinner) for thining and clean ups.
