Royal P-51D build

The 109 is sealed and ready for glassing. I won't glass it until Spring, though. Don't want to get messy in the basement with all that primer sanding..so I'll wait until it gets nice out and do it outside.
In the mean time I started on the P-51 yesterday. I already had the wing, stab & elevators done before I finished the 109. |

Starting to come along nicely....still got a lot of work to do. Waiting for my tail gear retract to come in from Tower. The mechanical retrats are just temporary, I'm going to order the Robart 606's for it.

RE: Royal P-51D build
I also have a royal p51d kit I bought 25 years ago still waiting for me to build, you are doing a great job on that one, a buddy of mine built one back in the day and powered it with a os90 and flew very well as I remember.

^ tell me about it....
I finished up the exhaust ports using a 1/4" dowel for the pipes and cutting them on an angle. I thought it would take me a while but it wasn't that bad. Finished it in less than an hour. Next is to drill air holes in the cowl and finish it up. And more sanding, of course... |

RE: Royal P-51D build
seems to be coming along nicely , what color scheme are you going with ?
|
RE: Royal P-51D build
I'm going to go with what's on the cover on the box: Tangerine. Getting tired of seeing all those silver mustangs..
http://www.mustangsmustangs.net/p-51...140_04_es1.jpg The fuse is glassed and ready to be primed. Pics coming soon. |
RE: Royal P-51D build
Are you putting the playboy bunny on it too? lol
|
RE: Royal P-51D build
Very nice don't think I have ever seen anyone do this color scheme before , But yeah I wanna know too, you gonna put the playboy bunny on it ? LOL !

Probably not. The scheme on the box is a little different than that pic. No playboy logo and the rudder isn't yellow. Also no invasion stripes on top of the wing, only the bottom.
http://djtaso.com/Royal/tangerineroyal.jpg This is probably the closest to the cover on the box I'll use as a reference: http://djtaso.com/Royal/3_137_b1.jpg Here are some pics of the fuse glassed with 4 coats. |

RE: Royal P-51D build
Added the panel lines on the fuse. I haven't glassed the lower cowl yet since I haven't decided on what engine to use so I can make the cut-out before I glass. I'm leaning towards an FS 120.
I will add the rivets after I finish the wing so I can tackle the whole job at once. http://djtaso.com/Royal/P-51D/DSC00440.jpg http://djtaso.com/Royal/P-51D/DSC00441.jpg http://djtaso.com/Royal/P-51D/DSC00445.jpg http://djtaso.com/Royal/P-51D/DSC00446.jpg http://djtaso.com/Royal/P-51D/DSC00447.jpg http://djtaso.com/Royal/P-51D/DSC00450.jpg http://djtaso.com/Royal/P-51D/DSC00451.jpg http://djtaso.com/Royal/P-51D/DSC00452.jpg http://djtaso.com/Royal/P-51D/DSC00455.jpg http://djtaso.com/Royal/P-51D/DSC00456.jpg Wing is next! |

RE: Royal P-51D build
The picture of N169MD was taken at the Reno National Air Races in 1973. It was owned by Dr. Burns Byram. He was an AME in Iowa and used to give the Sig's and Maxey Hester their medicals. I think he was a member of the Playboy Club in Chicago. He always looked cool with a sweater and a goatee. Dad said he was a "swingin' dude".
Unfortunately he was killed ferrying a P-51 recovered from Mexico back to the US in the mid 70's. The airplane was fairly accurate in it's scheme for the 70's, save for the N number, Playboy Bunny and Limited on the canopy. It looked neat to me at the time. Chris... |
