Enough engine for 17lb P-47?
 

I bought a used P-47 a while back, and had a friend of mine recover it. I have no idea what make it is. For all I know, it may be scratch built. The previous owner also bought it used, and was unable to give me any info about it. It was originally covered with fabric and dope, and it was recovered the same way. The wingspan is 77", fuse length is 64", and it tips the scales at 17 lbs, with an OS 1.60 FX.....which brings me to my question. Is the 1.60 enough engine for this size plane? It didn't have an engine when I got it, and I had hoped the 1.60 would work, but I'm not so sure after weighing it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Scott the 160 should fly it fine. Sounds like a Zoroli P 47.

Thanks. It didn't have an engine when I bought it, and I had the 1.60 on hand. I got a pretty decent deal on it. It had all the servos (one digital)and a huge set of spring down retracts that I also can't identify. (even the tail wheel retracts) I gave the guy $200.00 for it. My friend recovered it and painted it for the cost of the materials. I'm currently trying to find a 3-blade prop for it....

My KMP FW190 weights over 17lbs and has span of about 72".

Flies fine with an OS120AX. Agree with Baldeagle that your 160 should be OK

I built the Ziroli 70" span P-47 and it flew just fine with a OS 1.60 at 17 pounds. You're airplane has a bit more area due to the longer span and should fly even better. Post some pics, maybe somebody here can identify it. I know Brian Taylor has a 76" span P-47 plan, could be that one.

where is the center of gravity with the OS 1.60? is it on the main spar?

be careful it isn't too far back - could be a real handful in the air.

Haven't balanced it yet. Just got it back from being recovered/painted. Installed engine and electronics and weighed it. Balancing is next. I went ahead and took a couple of pics. I hope they uploaded.

I had a IMP Claude at 17.5 pounds with a Saito 180 and apc 17x8. Nice power but not 3d. I have a Platt Zero at 18.5 pounds with a OS 160fx and apc 17x10 prop and its more than enough power for scale flight. Depending on your need for speed you should have more than enough power for good flying. I like a bit more pitch for my warbirds and suggest you try some different props to get what you want in performance.

I was just wondering why you would be looking for a 3 blade prop. I have never seen a full size P-47 that didn't have a 4 blade prop. Just curious.

I had ruled out a 4-blade because I wasn't sure if the 1.60 would swing one big enough.Any idea what size I'd need? I'm using an 18-8 in a two blade, and it doesn't clear the bottom of the cowl but by 2 3/4". By the time I drop down in diameter for a 4-blade, it would barely clear. Might look a little silly, and I wonder what kind of performance I'd get from it. I had considered a 4-blade just for static purposes...

IMHO you should stick to a two blade. I ran a 3 blade carbon on my Saito 450r and it was OK but I did lose a bit of thrust. Looked good but I am more into performance than looks.

Hi!
Forget about a 4-blade prop! If you want any performance go with a 2-blade 18x6 Mentz (for the OS 26cc engine).

Thanks guys. After thinking about it a bit, I imagine a 2-blade is the way to go. If I want scale, I need a 4-blade, and I think that's pretty much out of the question. If I want performance, I need a 2-blade. A 3-blade will give me neither, sooo...
