Goose's H9 F4U Corsair ARF bash
 
Hey guys...

I had a Hangar 9 F4U Corsair that I bashed a little last season and it was a ball to fly.

Inspired by Navy0968, CorsairJock, EVT, Luke and a couple of others, I'm gonna bash this one and see what happens.

Right lets get started.

Two boxes, top one is obvious, bottom one is a The World Models 27% Ultimate that is borrowing the DL-50 out of my Mustang project for the summer.

Ok, now this is what happens when you put your Corsair through trees during finals.... not pretty.

Third pic shows it during better days...

Whats in the box.

I already know but for those of you following along, everything is nicely packaged and bagged and after a brief inspection, its all good with no damage.

H9 are pretty good at this ARF thing, this is my second purchase from them and both times I have had nothing but good experiences.

Its still an ARF and yes you need to do stuff to bring them up to scratch.

The first problem and probably the most complex to fix is the wing center section.

To simplify construction H9 made a horizontal section between the wing halves which is fine, but it extends out past the side of the fuselage quite a bit.

Like CorsairJock I wanted to fix this, looked at it and nearly gave up after figuring it was too hard and not worth it, but sense prevailed!

I read CJ's thread a few times before doing this and all credit is his. I did it a little different in places though.

There is something very wrong with taking a perfectly good airplane part and ripping off the covering and chopping it up.

But here we go...

Remove the belly pan and rip off the covering... [:'(]

Edit: That plywood plate for the wing bolts is glued on top of the covering... just as well it isnt structural :)

Put the centre section on the fuselage and the problem is obvious.

I drew lines where the fuselage meets the wing section and made a little jig to hold my pen to mark underneath.

Both sides of the centre section and each wing end all had different angles by upto a degree or two, so I averaged them and setup my scroll saw.

So with pucker factor set to 9, off I went and cut the end off in a single pass.

The test fit looks good and after some careful sanding, will fit great.

I cleaned up the end caps for re-use and removed the balsa rib from the spar to the TE as the plywood cap has to bend through a curve to the TE.

I marked a 2mm line inside both end caps as this now has to go inside the center section to be flush.

I used a disk sander which made short work of bringing these down to size and made some balsa stock with the correct angle to help support the endcap now the inside rib is removed.

You will need to trim the LE reinforcing and the spar pocket to receive the end cap.

Thats it for tonight...

Nice ! your making it look a little to easy LOL , a scroll saw sure made short work ...... what is your prefrence , glue wise when doing such an extensive mod such as this ?

Nice 'Mods' thread, v6goose.
For starters, you are taking many more pictures than I did: sure to be helpful to those that want to do the same. Getting rid of that 'step' on the wing is about the best thing you can do for the wing. The rest of the wing is pretty decent looking (more scale accurate than the kit built Top Flite Corsair). And as you have probably discovered: the hardest part is getting yourself to remove the perfectly good covering.

The hardest part is pulling good covering and chopping up a perfectly good aircraft! :D

Glue wise - all the same as you would normally use CA, epoxy, Titebond depending on the application...

Your thread is extremely helpful and was one that tipped the scales in favour of taking the saw to it.

Like I said, there is something quite wrong with sawing up good planes but the end result will be worth it.

I feel dirty ripping perfectly good covering off... but here we go towards naked. Factory worker QA42 would be horrified! [X(]

Interesting , was that rib break there ? Also i have the absolute same skin stress visable at the well area .
I am on my second one love the plane and interested in possibly following your steps

It sure was, not a big deal to fix but who would know it was there without removing the covering?

I'm not too surprised by the other one as they are bending the sheeting against the grain.

My second one too, love it as well... follow away, mine is simply a consolidation of all the others before me :D

Tonights effort is to close up those open wing bays.

I started by removing the rib caps... be careful, both the ribs and the caps are fairly soft and where there is glue, tends to break the ribs.

We are going to fill the open bay with 1/16" medium soft sheet being cautious about weight.

Here I have laid two sheets of 1/16" over the open bay, aligning one long edge with where the sheeting ends at the spar.

Next I drew the outline of the opening onto the sheet from the other side.

I used Titebond III to glue the sheets together and they are drying under weights as you read this...

True, BUT: there were many more ribs in the full scale, thus the spacing between them was signicantly different. I'm thinking one would have to triple the number of ribs to get even CLOSE to looking like the full scale, better off just sheeting it and using artistic talent to duplicate the fabric covered rib effect.

BTW, I am currently re-building my Top Flite Corsair wing, using foam core outer wings. I have applied 1/16" square spruce strips (instead of balsa sheeting) at the right places to duplicate the ribs on the full scale. I will be posting pics in the 'Top Flite Corsair Mods' this coming weekend.

You are correct Jeff!

And so is CJ...

The fabric covering extends from the wing tip to the outboard side of the ammo loading hatches then behind the hatches to the middle of the outboard flap (L shape left wing, reverse for right).

Fore and aft it starts at the main spar and ends at the TE.

To get more of a scale look, I am sheeting the bays closed and will then simulate ribs with strips prior to glassing.

I popped the sheets out from under the weights and gave them a little sand to make them fit in the wing bays (not glued in the pic).

I marked the scale flap locations on the wings and reached a decision point. How far am I going with external horns?

I rumaged around and found my RDS kit that I bought for the Mustang and decided to install it in the Corsair.

I'm gonna spend some time figuring that one out...

just a thought goose. use the rds to drive the center flap and attach the others with a piece of golden rod. it will flex when they spread from each other.
I've used the plastic rds but don't have alot of faith in them. on my meister p-47 i'm using these couplers that are offered by servo city.http://www.servocity.com/html/servo_..._couplers.html
just my 2 cents, bird looks good! hey what happened to the p-51 build?

Thanks for the comments.

Interesting idea with the golden-rod... will keep that in mind.

Excellent installation on the Jug.

I saw those couplers at Servo City after I had ordered the 'real' RDS kit... no loss.

The ailerons look perfect for an RDS install, the flaps will need some thinking. I agree driving the centre flap is the way to go and mechanically link the other two.

What spec of servo did you use for your flaps?
