RE: The RCFW Hellcat Group Build

I have a laser cut kit.

Racinrc14 08-08-2013 05:47 PM

Budmo, I sent you a PM.

hessian123 09-13-2013 08:13 AM

Any thoughts on whether this would be a good choice of engine for this plane?

I have one of those for my .60 Top Flite Corsair, but I havent run it yet,.. I think it will be perfect though, and I know it would fit in the Hellcat cowl.

Chad, I saw a guy at WOTR today carrying around what looked like your red hellcat prototype. Was that you? Are you going to fly it at the event? I'd love to catch a glimpse of it in the air.

That was me hessian! Unfortunately I was not able to fly it due to a ruptured fuel tank. I'm sitting here staring out the window at a steady drizzle so I imagine today is going to be a bust out at the field. I am bummed that I drove a 1000 miles and did not get to fly but on the bright side the Hellcat won the best self designed aircraft award so not a total bust.

In regards to the DLE 20, I have one as well which I am going to try and install in my prototype. I'm completely fed up with the mess that the .91FX leaves on the airplane. I'm not sure that it will b possible to keep the spark plug cap inside the Hellcat cowl but other than that I think it will fit beautifully.

Chad, I actually met you towards the end of the banquet on my way out the door. The weather was definitely a bummer but it was great to see so many great looking planes anyway. WOTR always inspires me to make some progress on my own builds...

I was also wondering about the feasibility and suitability of one of these other gas engines for the RCFW hellcat, any thoughts? The DLEs are nice, but I frankly get a little annoyed by the price variations and constant changes they seem to undergo. I saw the DLE20RA for $255 one day and the next it was $285. The HH pricing seems more consistent, and I'd bet their service is as at least as good as you'd get for any DLE...

I thought that might have been you hessian. Thanks for stopping to say hello. Regarding your other engine choices I think either of the Evo's would work fine. I had a 35cc Evo that was a very nice and very compact motor. I also have an RCGF 15cc which I'm currently running in another airframe which I may put into my Hellcat if it fits better than the DLE 20. I don't have a lot of run time on it yet but so far it has been very reliable and user friendly. I think any of the 15cc gassers would provide ample power for the airplane. I'm just not sure that they are physically much, if any, smaller than the 20cc engines. Zenoah makes a great engine (I have a G23 that is a sweetheart, as well as a G38, 45, and 62.) but I'm almost certain the G20 will not fit very well. Generally the Zenoahs are physically much larger than their counterparts. My intention at this point is to fly my Hellcat at our local scale event in October with the current .91FX for power and then I will probably pull it down to re-engine it. Whenever that happens I will be sure to post the results right here.

Congratulations on the award Chad. Your F6F is beautiful !!
The DLE 20 is a good engine, put the maiden on my F7F today with two of them.

I hope to make it up to CO. next year if the parts materialize for the "George".

Take care buddy,

Stephen

Chad Veich 09-18-2013 05:16 PM

Thanks a bunch Stephen. I'd love to hear more about the Tigercat which I think I can see in your avatar. ESM product? Let's see some pictures! Regarding the parts materialization, lemme guess, you're waiting on Darrell?

fw190d9 09-18-2013 08:36 PM

Chadster, Great to see you at WOTR and congrats on you award! Well deserved as that's the most scale hellcat Ive ever seen even it it is a bit "tiny". You shoulda told me you had a busted tank. I keep several sizes in my trailer, coulda helped you out.
E.
BTW, I still want those TA plans!

Chad Veich 09-19-2013 10:48 AM

Thanks Evan and it was great to see you again as well. Unfortunately we were thrashing around too much due to all the problems to really sit down and enjoy the event as much as we would have liked. I was going to throw another tank in the Hellcat for Sunday but the weather reports were pretty grim so didn't figure it was worth the effort. As it turns out the weather man was right for once! Keep yourself busy with some other projects for a while and I will make every effort to get back to the TA design while we are still young!

PS - I've started construction on an enlarged version of my Hellcat, 86 inches this time. Still pretty small by WOTR standards though!

Chad, I'm interested in the Hellcat....email me some details if you will......

Congrats Chad! I'm still lurking and looking for that giant scale come out!

Aloha!

Hi George,

You can see my build thread for the 1/6 scale Hellcat at the link below. This project has been stalled for a bit due to other commitments but is rolling again with the help of a friend. If you have any questions about the airplane that are not covered in the build thread just post them on the thread or shoot me an email.

Congrats, Chad on winning "Best Own-Design" or whatever the category is properly called!!! :D Very cool that a 1/8th scale model is standing tall amidst all those dang big boys!

Thanks for posting the pic John! As noted in a previous post I was unable to fly the Hellcat at WOTR due to a split fuel tank. However, I did attend our One Eighth Air Force scale fly-in last weekend and put five more flights on the Hellcat. The airplane performed flawlessly and rewarded me with a first place for "Best Military Flight".

Here she is at the event lined up with some of the other heavy metal in attendance.

A flight shot of the Hellcat at the event, taken by Phillip Todd, can be seen here.

In other Hellcat news my brother is back to work on getting the ex-Robert Vogel Hellcat racer back in the air. This is the one Robert built for warbird racing that we purchased from him when he decided it was more airplane than he was willing to risk on the race course. He came to that conclusion after somebody took about an inch off the top of the vertical fin with their prop during a race! At any rate, it looked like this when we purchased it.

And I think my brother has decided it will look like this when we are done with it.
