Bagging a wing

Iunderstand that laying down fiberglass cloth with resin on a wing and then bagging it makes for a smooth surface with little surface prep before painting. If done correctly are there any disadvantages? Will .75 oz. cloth weave still show through if the resin is used sparingly?
