Looking for Aerotech P-51 owners
 
I'm interested in speaking with owners of Aerotech P-51's to get some set up info and any insights into this kit. Please post some photos and videos if you have them. I want to gather up all the info I can leading up to eventually building one and since this kit is no longer in production I can already tell the info is getting sparse.

1/5 scale P-51 Mustang
Full composite kit
Museum scale surface detail and scale outline

What engine are you using?
Did cooling become an issue?
Did you try the Moki 1.8 with rear exhaust and tuned pipe? Good or bad experience?

Since we have such incredible power options in electric brushless motors and ESC's I'm actually considering an electric conversion for this plane...we'll see.

Any info on this kit will be welcome, thanks.

We have a few people around here that have one. I think Venomous means the Aerotech "ALL COMPOSITE" P-51 Mustang. I don't have one, but I just talked to Wayne on the 26th about the engine choice....DA_50 is by far the best choice motor for that plane. It will fit in just fine with a prop hub extention, with the tip of the spark plug boot sticking out. It is not a light plane. I would not go electric on it.

I would put a 3w50i or 3w55i in it. The motor has a longer stem and puts the head further back into the cowl.

Just be advised that this is a heavy loaded war bird. You can't horse it around. If you do it'll snap. I watched on at Scale Masters, the pilot pulled up into a loop and tugged to much elevator. The plane snapped and spun in.
I've met and talked with Wayne many times. He's a really good guy and his planes look great when finished.

Wayne uses about an 1-1/2" prop hub extention (turned steel) on the DA. I doubt it is shorter than the 3W.
All of the warbirds will snap if you pull too hard on them. He must have been a former pylon racer back in the day.

This is what Wayne is flying as of last Tuesday....

Thanks for the heads up on the weight issue. I guess due to the robust construction the plane ended up on the heavy side. I haven't seen the firewall yet so I'm not sure about the space inside there. So it looks like you just have to fly it fast and scale then. I guess the wing is also very true to scale which contributes to the tendency to be critical at certain speeds and maneuvers. Had the wing been made more sport scale, possibly thicker, I would imagine the plane would have better characteristics and less prone to snapping. In any case I'll have to keep her light and go easy on the sticks.

Are there any flying at all anymore? I understand they only made around 360 or so units of this kit and thats over many years. This ones a rare breed and I was lucky enough to finally find one new and untouched and complete with all the details.

Any photos you guys know of I can check out?

Look for Waltsrchanger.com, he built one a while back and took pictures along the way. Its the most I've been able to find on the net concerning this model. Not a lot of flight info though.
I got the last one made. It has the DA 50 with prop extention. I don't like the idea of a spark plug hanging out so I'm scratching my head over that one. I've only just started cutting out the servo hatches. Looks like an arf but it isnt, a bit of work to get it done I think. Going to finish mine as "Tempus Fugit".

I owned and flew two of them, so I probably know as much about them as anyone. I had the Moki in it at one point-flew fine but a real pain in the butt to start and deal with the tuned pipe as well-don't consider it. My last one had the custom gas engine in it he offered before the DA was retrofitted. It too had the pipe, and if i had it to do over, I would not run a pipe, as you can't access the inside of the fuse without removing it first. The DA with pitts muff is probably the best solution.
Flys great and lands fairly slow with full flaps.Without flaps on landing, it will zoom right by you and require a LONG runway. Heavily loaded though, so as noted above, careful with the elevator throw. Very scale airplane but watch the weight, as it gets heavy fast.

It's a totally different P-51 and is smaller than the fiberclassic/Comparf plane.

I have built one but haven't flown it yet. This summer for sure. The plane is painted with mirra chrome on the fuse and surfaces to resemble bare aluminum. The wing is painted the correct color of silver as was the actual airplane. I obtained the paint codes from the fellow in IL that restored a P-51 as a blue noser from the 352.

With the carbon fibre fuselage you cannot use the regular 2.4 Ghz receiver in it.

You will need the special 2.4GHz rcvr made for CF models.

Mine has a 72Mghz PCM RCVR with a whip antenna & MOKI 1.8 with internal pipe.

Like was said above it has a high wing loading and can't be forced into the air and you need to keep the power up during landing.

IE: Fly it like the real thing.

I have a Aerotech P51, I am going to install a MVVS 58 LC [ liquid cooled] engine with supplied with radiator and plumbing.

What I would like is their eny owners that have the model with the DA 50 engine with the Tru-Turn single bolt hub extension, that was the choise engine recomended before Aerotech cease makeing them. My Mustang was set up for a Moki 210 engine, I will have to cut away the bulkhead and make a new one to attach the MVVS 58LC.

1. I require exact length and and diameter of the extension and what it is made of steel or aluminium.
2. How is the single bolt hub attached to the extension, the threaded shaft diameter, length and type of thread imperal or metric
3. What length the stand offs is used to attach the DA50 to the bulkhead and what thickness plywood was used to absorb the engine virbration
4. Has enybody fitted a Keleo creation exhaust to the model fitted with DA50 engine
5. Some close up photos of your DA50 installation would be apreshated.

I just built one for a friend who is selling it. All servos installed, cockpit installed, almost ready for paint with DA 50 installed. Contact Gary at aerotech. They are no longer making kits but still making scale parts

What are you doing about a pilot ? I need a pilot for mine and have not been able to find anything suitable locally.

Aces Of Iron has a realistic unpainted 1/5 military bust that I am going to use with a carved addition so he will fit in the seat. I have used their pilot in a couple of air planes and they make a great looking little dummy. Go to their site and read the tutorials on how to paint.
