hi does anyone have any plans of a torpedo boat i can have in pdf format?,or are there any sources for free plans that you can let me know about?.any help much appreciated on this.im looking to build from scratch ,ive seen plenty of things for german boats but they dont interest me .im looking to build one arround 4 ft long using foam and covering this with glass and polyester resin.do i need to cover the foam with anything does the resin im using eat foam?.if so what would be good to cover the foam 1st? brown paper and white glue? or something else?thanks .

Don't use polyester resin, use epoxy resin. Epoxy does not attack the foam.

As for plans, seems like we go through this at least twice a year. [&:]

So many questions, so little time. There are US and German torpedo baot plans on the Yahoo Group BigGunsModelWarship, set up for 1/144 scale, but enlarge to your heart's content. There are also several PT Boat sites, and I believe one of them has some plans on it as I recall. Gogle is handy here, also the Images search function. There is also a kit out there (in fact, I believe there are a couple of different ones from different manufacturers like Dumas and Midwest) that are the size you are looking to make (no need to reinvent the wheeel fron scratch).

As to covering the foam with something, one of our members does that. Uses tinfoil. You get a better looking model, though, if you build a plug, and from that, make a mold, and then lay the fiberglass in the negative mold. If you are doing it the wqay you are discussing, be sure and reduce the foam block dimensions by the thickness of the hull you plan to lay.

yea thanks for the tip i know epoxy doesnt eat foam but i allready have a large tin of polyester resin so thats what im using.thanks for the links the 1st one was what i was looking for so thanks again.ill try getting the lines copied to size and go from there.im also in the middle of building a sail boat from plans and have just covered the planked hull with fibre glass so thats why im using the resin i have.im sure if i can get the hull shaped and sanded smooth ill get a good finnish on the hull.im using very thin cloth so maybe 2 layers on the foam will make it stronger ,once this has been done i will be putting the frames in where they are needed.i probably wont build the boat for a while but i want to get the hull made at least to use up this resin as i dont want it going off as i believe it has a short shelf life of 3 months.thanks again guys any help is more than welcome,ps i dont think ill be building working cannons for this boat but they look very cool.not sure they are legal here though lol,also never thought of a zenoah to power it but that looks a cool way to power the boat plenty of power .even a weed eater might do (cheaper too).;)

Since you have the polyester resin already, I would shape the hull, paint a couple of layers of latex house paint over the foam, and then duct tape it.

thanks for the tip on the duct tape ,wont that create lines creases ?i was thinking of brown paper and white glue.ive covered a plane in it before and this stuff dries as hard as nails and best thing is you can sand it too plus the paper shrinks a bit giving a tight covering.next question is will the resin harm the paper?.anyone who hasnt covered anything with brown paper and white glue before be prepared to be amased by the results i did a plane using one layer of it on a balsa skinned wing and fuse few coats of glue and sanded .very smooth finnish with no joints visible when sanded,then just paint it.adds a lot of strength to the plane as well and suprisingly its not as heavy as you might think either.thanks for all the advice though much appreciated.

Experience is the best teacher.
Since I switched to epoxy resins, I haven't had to worry about protecting foam at all.
If you have been succesful in the past using brown paper, go for it.
And show us pictures of the hull later, as we do enjoy seeing a good build up.
