Angry ESC blinking green, then constant red

I drive a Volcano EPX Pro. I've tried recalibrating, even tried a different battery and receiver. I get no steering and no throttle and constant blinking red light.. I unplugged everything and plugged it all back in. It ran for a few minutes but very slowly. Then noticed the black wire for the throttle/receiver connection looked frayed or melted exposing some of the wire. Also noticed it was slightly loose at the female input side. Could a slight fray (or melt) shut down the ESC completely? Or a lose connection? Should I try and change out the throttle wire from the esc or is it a lost cause? Do I need a new ESC? Also tried the 3800 NiMH battery.. Long story short, I'm not sure what combination messed it up or what else I can do to test it. Thanks for your help.
