Help??
Ok im a complete newbie at this and i jus bought a new redcat earthquake 3.5 on ebay. I was super excited to get it in and when it finally arrived i wanted to break it in right away. So i made sure i read the manual and listened to all the things i should do before i started the car. I made sure the high speed seting was at 4 1/2 turns, made sure i primmed the engine before i started the motor. I bought the my red cat that came with the complete starter kit (tools and the igniter). So i do all of that and could not for the life of me get the thing to start. I have to mention that i did leave the igniter charged over night and it was super hit when i pulled it out. I am a noobie so i thought this was ok? I tried for 2 hours to get the motor started and failed horrible. I thought i flooded the engine so i did the recommendations (turned the igniter to loosen the compression, flipped the car over and pulled the cord to get rid of the flood) nothing happened, still no start. That is when i decided to give it a rest for a couple of hours. I came back and to try and start it again, i decided to use a different igniter that my cousin had bought from the hobby store. A couple of cranks and the motor started up, i ran it at idle to break it in but it ran for 5 min and shut off? i started it again and it started fine but it cut off again after another couple minutes. I tried to start it again for a third ime and now it wont even start. I've been trying for the past couple days now to get it going but with no luck. Can anyone help me out? I havent even seen my car run antwhere and i had soo much high hopes for this new hobby. Please any suggestions or reasons why my car isnt running will be much appreciated. Thanks

RE: Help??
In the break in it is normal for the engine to cut off because it should be running very rich with alot of smoke and oill comming out of the pipe while it is running idle it is more then likely it is hard to start because with it running idle the oil and gas has build up in the engine. The best way to break in on idle while it is sitting off the ground is once you get it crunk and intermitten intravles give a lil gas on the remote to blow out some of the gas and oil to keep it running. dont give alot of gas just enough to keep it running and you will see alot of smkoe and oil comming out of the pipe. Make sure you have a temp gauge to keep an eye on your engine temps while it is running. Once you get through the first tank off the ground it will be easier to keep the car running while you drive around slowly in figure 8s because you will be hitting the throttle a little and blowing out the gas and oil instead of it building up in the engine. rmove you glow plug and see if it is wet wips it off but do not touch the element wire because they are easy to break. i hope this helps and please enjoy this new hobby it is great.

RE: Help??
Only thing Ican say is hang in there. Abrand new motor is the biggest pain in the butt. Iwent throught the same trouble. Couldnt get it started then did but later on could not get it started again. Iended up putting a roto start on mine becuase Ihate pull starts. In the end Iended up sending mine to Redcat to check it out and set my niddle correctly. Got it back started it up finished the break in. Once you get that motor broken in thing become much easier. Mine now starts with little effort and I enjoy running it all the time. Like Isaid you just got to hang in there.

RE: Help??
Yes this is great advice also hang in there and boy do the rotor start make this a whole lot easier the pull cord is the first thing i take off all my cars and replace with roto start.

RE: Help??
i recently broke in a backdraft 3.5(same motor)
its a frustrating process, but each tank gets easier. with each tank the motor will start easier and run longer without stalling. trust me, hang in there and when you get through 5 tanks and can tune the motor for performance you will be very happy! |
RE: Help??
Thanks for the input and advice. I have tried for the past hour to get the damn thing started and nothing happens. The motor will not start for the life of me. I seiously think i ruined the motor but im not one to give up. I will see about my glow plug, thanks rchobbyunlimited

RE: Help??
Your welcome you might have to open the carb a lil more also or adjust on your remote to open the carb a lil more to give a lil more gas to aid in the crank process.

RE: Help??
man you sound just like me lol. Ithought Idestoryed my motor too. Igave up and sent it to Redcat they set my LSN, HSN and it started right up when it got back to my house. It has ran ever since. Me being a noob Imessed up my niddle so bad the thing would not start.
Man would I love someone to make a electronic air fuel mixture device like we have on our cars. Now that would be amazing. |
RE: Help??
Yeah new engines are a pain to start until you get them broken in. The roto start is certainly worth it, even if you just get the back plate and drill wand, you can use a drill to start it.
I ripped through the gears on my starter box twice while trying to break in one of my truggies. I found out it it is much easier to start a new engine if you take a heat gun and heat the engine to 150F before you start it. A hair dryer will also work and is probably safer. The other trick is to put a second washer on the glow plug to help reduce compression or loosen the glow plug 1/4 - 1/2 turn. Also, make sure the piston is in the down position before trying to start it. Take the glow plug out and move the flywheel until the piston hits dead bottom. Mark a spot on the flywheel with a marker or paint pen so you know when the piston is at dead bottom. Take the glow plug out an make sure it lights up with your glow starter. I've gone through several plugs while breaking the engine in, it's really hard on the plugs. Also, you had mentioned you had the HSN set at 4 1/2 turns. Start it at 2 1/2 turns. There's a misprint in the manual. It's probably flooding because it is too rich. Make sure you have the idle screw set so the carb is open 1mm at idle. You'll have to adjust this as well when the engine breaks in. |
RE: Help??
Great news after much trying i have have finally got the motoer running and is in the middle of tuning. Thanks to everyone for all the advice and responses. But it did not last long, in the middleof tuning, i was getting little throttle response from the car and then no throttle response at all. Upon further inspection I found the throttle to be wide open and could not get any control from my radio. I have fresh batterries and have complete steering control. I dont know what the problem is? Can anyone help me on this problem? Thanks to everyone again for all the helpful responses!

RE: Help??
Check your throttle servo reversing switch. It maybe working backwords? Switch the throttle and sterring servo plugs in the receiver to see if the steering does the same.

RE: Help??
when reading your first post you say that you loosen the glow plug to clear a possible flooded motor?
to clear a flooded motor, remove the glow plug and pull the motor over. also, tip the truck side-to-side. sometimes a nitro can become soo flooded that fuel will sit in the muffler. you clear out the top end, but as soon as you pull the motor over fuel rushes from the muffler into it and floods it again. |

Thanks to everyone again for all the helpful responses! go to redcat's website, and find there warrenty form. fill it out and they will send you a replacement servo quickly. when i got mine, i noticed that it was different from the stock servo(differnt numbers on it) so the stock servos must be from a bad batch, and the replacement servos they send are better. |
RE: Help??
My EQ 3.5 the throttle servo went out in about a week and a half i put a futaba s3003 on it and havent had no problem sense
