Brushed volcano converted to brushless.
 

Ok I may be a knucklehead so please bare with me. My son has a Volcano brushed version. Well we smoked the motor running on grass. So I bought the leopard 3300 kv
brushless. I installed the kit with no problems at all however do I need to change any gears or can I use the pinion gear that was on the stock brushed motor.

Check keep checking temps. U don't want the motor to go over 160°f the ESC should stay cool but it needs to stay under ~130°f.
If it gets too hot then gear down. So say the pinion is a 17t take it to 15t check temps and if it is under the 160° after a good bash then ur good.

While out and running it give it a couple speed runs(like straight line full throttle) and some running off road like u would drive normally, check temps ever 5mins for the first pack u should be able to get a good handle on it after the first pack
Too hot- gear down
Still pretty cool- gear up(if u want)
Going down 1 tooth on the pinion could mean the difference in a fried ESC/motor to a good running power efficient truck.

Here is my new problem. Put everything together put the truck on the ground and it wont move.
I pulled the motor out again but left it connected to the power source to make sure she spins forward and reverse
and all seems good. However I can stop the pinion gear from spinning with my fingers with almost no pressure at all.
it seems like there is not enough torque to turn the wheels.
Doesn't seem right.

Wait, did u buy only the brushless motor or was it a ESC/motor combo.
If all u did was buy a brushless motor and not change the ESC then u need a brushless ESC to make the motor work.

it was an entire kit.and it all works fine until i put the gears together. Then it seems like it has to labor to much to turn the wheels.

So maybe there's a bind. Did u mesh the gears too tight?
Of u got it as a motor ESC combo it should be OK. But maybe u got a defective unit, can u send it back for replacement?

Funny you say that. I also posted this in the general section and thats the general consensus so far. It appears as if I have a defective motor.

Another thing u could check is if it came with a program card try to see if the settings are messed up. And if u had to solder the wires on urself then make sure u have a-a b-b c-c and that they have good connections.
Simple things like that can make a motor not work right.

thanks Zack. Wires actually came pre soldered and look good and as for the program card I re programmed a few times with no changes. Some times I guess you can just get a defective item. I just wish it wasnt with my first one because I rattled my brain a bit trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. Oh well now i just know a little bit more. Thanks again.
