Lost Driveshaft

hey, i just got done running my volcano sv and noticed that only the rear wheels were turning. After further inspection i realized the front driveshaft was missing. So now my 4 wheel drive is 2 wheel drive. Has this ever happened to ne one else? What caused it? And what is the proper name for the replacement part?

Thanks

front drive shaft or dogbone (technically the dogbones go from the diffs to the wheels) , its a good idea to paint them a flourescent yellow, orange or red so when they fall out you have a better chance of finding them. I must admit i never do it but its a good idea. They shouldnt fall out, is something else missing, the cup they go into??

RE: Lost Driveshaft

what does the cup look like?

ehroof 11-18-2006 09:54 PM

RE: Lost Driveshaft

its where the shaft slides into, look at the front and back of the transmission, you will see it there. look at your rear shaft.

ok, thanks. there is no cup on the front, connecting it to the front wheels. Do you know where they would sell that? And does the cup bolt on or is it a self locking mechinism?

RE: Lost Driveshaft

there is a grub screw, like a set screw in it.

you will have to order it online, clermontmotorsports.com or topspeedtoys.com

Your parents must have a credit or debit card. If not, someone else you know does. On-line is the ONLY way you're going to get these parts. As far as I heard, there's only like 5-7 hobby shops in North America that have decided to sell Redcat. The parts themselves will probably cost less than the s/h, so you may want to put a spur gear and a complete set of front arms on your list. Don't worry, all this stuff won't set you back much. It's better to have it BEFORE you need it, so when you do need it, you won't have to wait.
Oh, when your clutch spring breaks, replace it with a Traxxas one. Mine didn't break after a whole gallon of fuel, but I've heard some go after just a few tanks or less. A replacement HPI heavy duty (hardened steel) clutch bell will help out a lot, as well as a good gear mesh. If you go to the back of your manual or the RCR website you can get the part numbers you need, then order them from topspeedtoys.com or clermontmotorsports.com as ehroof said.
I know this thread was started about your driveshaft, but I'm just giving you a heads up on some issues you will inevitably run into. And to answer your question about this happening to anyone else - yes, it happened to my SV as well. Fortunately my shaft was just sitting on my chassis and the drive cup was still on it! I have NO CLUE how it came off, but it will never happen again, thanks to a few drops of BLUE LOCTITE. If nobody told you or you didn't read it yet, you MUST blue loctite any (EVERY) metal to metal threads, especially the engine mounting screws. Plastic is fine, no need to loctite. Get it at any hardware store, Home Depot, Lowes. Get blue NOT red. Red is permanent, blue is temporary.

hey guys just some advice. The hurricane is virtually an exact clone of the inferno mp7.5 and so I have found that lots of kyosho parts fit. Its just a guess but you many find other brands will also be compatable with the volcano.

Plus the best parts for redcat/himoto is himotoracing.com or exportpro.biz. Or alternatively they have Ebay web stores. These are the best places to buy parts from in terms of price, availability & postage.

Talk to somebody at topspeedtoys or clermontmotorsports and tell them what parts you need and get a price to include tax, if any, and shipping. Ask them who to have a bank check or money order made out to and then go to a bank, grocery store that sells money orders, oe even western union and have the money sent that way. I bet TST or Clermont will work with you on this issue. This is just one of many ways of getting around the no credit card issue. A bank transfer will work too but is a little more involved and there is always COD but this alwys costs more to do. Hope this helps and good luck.

Well I have lost my front left drive shaft and I can not find it online I have even emailed topspeedtoys and RC-universe and they don't have it. It is not listed on Redcats website either. I have emailed them but no response yet. I might have to get a shorter one weld it back together with filler in it.

That's definitely an ingenuitive way to go about it, but you could just take the better, easy way and go here - http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...93p?&C=CMC&P=7 and try to find one the same length, or a mm or so longer (not shorter or you'll lose it in a minute). As we all know here, HPI makes a lot of compatible parts, so you may want t jump right to their section.

As for the money order/bank check thing, that is also a great idea, especially if your in no hurry to get your parts. Remember, you first place the order then send the check or money order. They don't even process the order until the check/money order is in their hand, then they ship it. You could be talking almost 2 weeks before you see your parts. I'm not knocking this method, but everyone knows SOMEONE with a credit/debit card, whether it's a sister, brother, mother, father, aunt, uncle, grandma, grandpa or a good friend or acquaintance. It's not like you'll be putting their credit in jeopardy over $20 worth of parts! I could see if you asked them to charge you a Revo 3.3 or something. Now that's a whole other story![&:]

Good advice! Yeah money orders/banks cheques is a very time wasting excersise but I understand that not everyone has access to a CC and many people wont let you use their card online.
You could always use a CC on paypal as they have measures to reclaim your money if anything goes wrong. I know there's heaps of people that hate paypal but for me I have had no poblems so far.

Like zak said, you can get whatever size you want, depending on how much torque or top end you want.
The stock is 16t, so I went with an 18t, which made it a lot faster AND still has a ton of torque. The Volcanos were designed with ALL torque right out of the box, plenty to spare. You will be thrilled with an 18t...

You will have to completely start from scratch when tuning. My settings wee WAAAAY off when I changed over, but that's normal and tuning is simple.

For anyone interested .28mm according to my gazintas is .011 inch or about 4 human hairs, you pick the color, and if that makes the fit too tight it was too tight to begin with. I'm gonna have to hurry up and get me a volcano so I can start having some fun.
