Drill start trouble, help!
 

Hi all I am having trouble getting my avalanche to turn over with the glow plug in. I have a drill start, and it turns over fine as long as the glow plug is out, as soon as i put the plug in though, it might turn over once or twice, but not enough to start. It seems that it is not catching. I'm not sure if this is important or not, but i recently crashed it pretty hard at full throttle head on, bent the chassis and center dogbones pretty good, which i have fixed. When i first installed the drill start, it did the same thing, so i took it apart, put it back together, and it worked fine. This time however, it did not. I'm new to the hobby, so any advice would be much appeciated. Thanks

i dont know about these but is your drill supposed to be in forward or reverse? and is your one way bearing installed correctly. just some thoughts.

Yes i believe it is set up correctly. i have used the drill start for about a week, and had the truck running many times. It is also turning over fine, as long as the glow plug is out. very strange

ok, so i pulled it all apart again. i pulled of the engine backhousing, lined everything up again, put it all back together, and got it sort of working. It will turn over now a little better with the plug in, but it is still slipping @ high RPM on the drill. I think that the bearings that grab on to the starter screw is not holding it properly.Does that sound right? is there a fix for this problem that anybody knows about, or any suggestions on what to do?thanks

what kind of fuel are you using?

it is traxxis 20% nitro. it was actually the only stuff my lhs had in stock.

i kinda figured as much...it's a common problem...i'm pretty much a newbie myself and everyone was able to help me out in here with the same problem...

that fuel has too high an oil content and will cause the one way bearing to slip...i've since thrown my traxxas fuel away
u can either clean the OWB with carb cleaner or with new fuel with less oil content...i've done it both ways, but the carb cleaner seemed to flush the oil out a bit better
that should fix it

thanks a lot man. that sure sounds like what is going on. I will tear it apart again and give it a try. Can you reccomend a fuel that would be good to use for my truck, or the correct oil content. thanks

that question's best left to the veterans on this board
i use rocket science, but it's also 20%...haven't had problems with it, nor have i used any other brand fuel

he is correct, traxxas fuel has alot of oil and the sh engines have an internal one way, the traxxas fuel will make the one way bearing start to slip. you have to take the backplate off, get to the bearing and spray it down with some carb cleaner or brake cleaner, let it dry and re install it. Bryrons, odonells, trinity are good fuels, most fuels are good and traxxas is good to but not for engienes with internal one way bearings.
