Volcano 2 speed trans....
Got my new redcat yesterday. The top speed is a little less than expected. I ordered the sv and would like to have the two speed trans. Can that be added?

RE: Volcano 2 speed trans....
yes you can, but i would suggest you get a direct drive tranny with the 13 tooth clutchbell, this can be purchased as a set from somewhere, i think rufaster might have it. it will give u both better top end and low end, where as the 2 speed will give you better high end but less low end power
|
RE: Volcano 2 speed trans....
i disagree on the direct drive...especially in the volcano.
it will give much more top end, but you will loose a ton of low end torque. the truck will take off like it is trying to pull a bunch of weight behind it....and it will not even spin the tires in the dirt.
once it gets going it will have much more top end speed. I got the direct drive with the 13 tooth clutchbell and i was sadly dissapointed. it's actually harder to control at both slow and high speeds. at slow speeds, i like the low end torque to help you throttle out of slides and stuff. with the direct drive, the low end just isn't there to do that, top end wise, it's so much faster that it is hard to control. (this is all in my opinion...everyone drives different)
from what alot of people were saying about it, i was expecing the same or more low end, with a big increase in top end...but instead i lost a ton of low end and gained a ton of top end. i literally pulled the direct drive out and put the stock trans back in the very next day after i installed the direct drive.
given the tire size and gear ratios with the volcano the only way that i can see to improve both low end, and top end is with a more powerful motor...but then, the drivetrain will take more abuse than it can handle.
from what i have read here, the 2 speed trans may not be the best either. say you're off roading...climbing ahill or something. the truck is in low gear, pulling fine up the hill. the trans shifts to second, and you loose rpms, torque and momentum. other opinions have said that the 2 speed is good if you are running it on the road all the time, and that it's not good for offroad because when the trans shifts to 2nd, the rpms drop, and the torque drops with the shift. it's harder for the engine to get back into the torque peak to give the best power. again, these are just my opinons based on what i have read here. Ido not own or have i ever ran a volcano with a 2 speed in it. i'm just saying that from what others have said, it may not be the best option for serious off roading. if you are looking for flat out top speed on flat ground, then it may be what you want (either the 2 speed or the direct drive.) i like to have major bottom end power for off roading....top endspeed isn't always what it's cracked up to be, especially if you are running it in the dirt with hills, jumps and bumps. think about real monster trucks, making 1100- 1200 horsepower. top end speed on them is maybe 50 mph depending on how they are geared for the track that they are running on. all of the show and awesome stuff is done with low end torque.
|
RE: Volcano 2 speed trans....
Thanks Rob and Per. After running a few more tanks in it and doing a bit more tuning the top speed seems to have increased considerably. I have also noticed the incredible low end torque I really would not want to loose that. I think I will play around with it a little more before deciding on which option to go with. Thank you both for your advise.

RE: Volcano 2 speed trans....
most of the 2speed trans are made for speed.. aka on road, i know they come in some on\off road rcs, but i don't see the point of having 2 speed when ur off roading in a SV,
|
RE: Volcano 2 speed trans....
Ya there's different strokes for different folkes. I remember when i got the direct drive it gave a little more bottom end and a lot more top end. But eventually i lost the pinch in my motor and it didnt have the power i needed, so i had no low end. I just picked up a new sh18 and im gonna throw that in and see how it is with that, but the sh is more powerful so it should be great.
