Default Twin

Ok guys, Rethrashing an old bird. The old (Heavy Lift) twin boom is being converted from a 61 to twin 52.

Old vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nL36kor8bu4

What is the set up on the thrust lines? 1-2 deg towards the outer tips and no downthrust.
Still have to sort out the tail flutter it had real bad..Im sure this is going to fly faster..

Just opened up the wing, The only thing that is salvagable is the main spar. the rest of the frame work is splintered.
The lower wing sheet is twisted. So it looks like a new wing...and a stronger frame work...

Ran up the new engines today. Put a tank through them. Will fit OB glow as one of then has a real good piston pinch..
Had them singing at 12k rpm, one engine is set up as a slave so I can trim both. The sound is unreal and trim one out of sync even better. Just have to resize the tail feathers and maiden her tomorrow Big storms for the next week..Have to get it done..

Also draged out the sons SPA3D and made a new wing for her. Hes itching for a glow plane again...

It's cool, we had snow yesterday and I was watching my 5 min ration of tv last night, and saw
the Aussies in santa hats on the beach.
Seeing the bikinis made me forget about the bloody spad build. Oy.

I reused the BH Tornado UC and re bent them, then mounted them on the engine beams...

Did the maiden..... Was fighting it to try and trim her and was getting worse. Took me while to realise that I had an engine dropping out of sync as the wind was blowing and up high. She wanted to roll over and yaw. I brought her over head and saw I had a dead engine..Did 1 missed aproach and got the other. Not the best landing, But this is my first flight with a Glow powered twin with a dead engine.... Ran the engines up and found she is sucking air in the fuel....
Have vids.

Had my 1st crash on sunday.
Did a high speed nose dive and the LH engine died, This one gives little trouble. I pulled out of the dive with idle power, hit the power and she dropped the wing and went into a spiral, the rudders had no effect.
She hit the deck nose down on a steep sand hill...No damage, just sand in the carbies...
Later I unbolted the tail and found the rudder servos disconected. It had a clip lock on the plug. There is no way the 2 plugs could come out...
I know when I conected the tail boom (have the remove it to get it in the car) the rudder and elev were the wrong way around so I re did it...How I missed the rudder I dont know...Im sure I did a pre flight after...
But then I remember taking off and notting the tail wheel was'nt responding....
Allways get a 2nd pre flight by some one else...

Congrats on a successful maiden flight an engine out on a twin is a challenge to land, good job getting it down in 1 piece.

Sorry to here about the crash, glad there was little damage.
Missing something in the preflight check that causes a loss of control is not good, but it happens to every one sooner or later.
Making a check list and keeping it in the field box is a good way to prevent missing something.

He didn't have rudder control !!! so I doubt a pusher/puller would have faired any better. [X(]

Keep at it jaav
Cool video too thank You for taking the time to post it.

Hi MrGreenSpeed
Why so negative? I believe my Pusher/Puller could fly fine with one engine out and no rudder control. I flew mine many times with only one engine, since on a good day it could take off on one engine. I know that model, like the majority of models, except for conventional twins, would fly OK with no rudder input in the air. No big deal either way.

Another cool video jaav .
Some pucker going on when You lost sight over the water [X(] I'm glad You got it back.
Man that wind sounded mean but the twin sounds like the engines are getting better.
I think You need to lean the low speed jet on the engine that is loading up and quitting. ( just a guess )
I like the sound of twin engines at full song
Cool donut at the end
Keep the videos coming there great to watch.

Mr Villa.
It's bin My experience that once stalled and in a death spin You need rudders to have any chance of get out of the spin before impact.
Didn't mean to sound negative at all.

This bird was built as a step up to the P38 or B25 Balsa (shudder) bird, to get some know how on engine flame outs and controll. So Im learning...

Hi MrGreenSpeed
When an engine stops on a Pusher/Puller, there is no stall, there is no spin, and there is no need for rudder input since there is no uneven thrust. Sometimes I was not certain that an engine had stopped. I usually had to bring the plane closer to see if a prop was stopped. My plane was always able to maintain altitude on one engine, and even gain altitude when needed, but not as quickly as with both engines running.

Heretic I say Heretic .................LOL!
If You watch the Draftman 1, build videos on Youtube I'm sure You could build a coro version;
however;
ARFs are cheap enough to go with a great looking wood plane too...
Hope You start a build thread on which ever one You decide to build.

Hi jaav
Others, when they build a conventional twin, will put out-thrust on each engine to help fight the one engine out problem. How many degrees did you have? Recently I read a post that suggested 8 degrees of out thrust. I believe I had 3-4 degrees on mine and it was still a terror when I lost an engine. I have made a note that if I ever do a conventional twin again, that it should have 8 degrees of out thrust.

It has about 4 deg out thrust. I have no problem flying this bird on 1 engine, its just when there are no rudders to play with..

With the weather realy crap at the moment, rain and cyclone after cyclone, I dare not take any Balsa birds out....Out came the SPADs.
I put the old Bipe together and ran her up but kept on leaning out at take off..air in the fuel line. The SPA3D didnt like the rain on the RX. So I had a very good run on the twin. did 3 flights with no dead engines the last flight I relaxed and realy put her through the ringger...If the airframe was going to fail it was on this run..I did like the unlimited climb, nose down, spiral then pull up hard. I had my head cam on but it was'nt pointing at the plane again[:@] I changed the HK LSD batteries used for the OB glow to a higher brand quality and sorted out the dead engine problem..Inverted at idle, then spiraling down at idle then open the engines and still have 2 runing was great...Shame about the rain as I was having fun....Also the 1st time I've been able to taxi home because of both engines running at landing....Once one dies she will only tune one way...

Joel, the beach is the only option at the moment as the air field has been under water since November..We have a big gathering on the beach early mornings to watch us...Allways get a cheer when "one" goes in... The salt water can save the air frames but destroys the electrics... Li-Pos go great in salt......

Had a run with the Twin today. Only up there for a few mins when The FI wanted to have a run on her. He's only flown it once at the testing stages and hated it.
This time he was impressed and had fun with her.

Found that as a compliment....For a balsa boy..
