SPADSTICK QUESTION

hi all, i want to build a Spadstick. the description i find on the STTB site says the wingspan is 52 inches and fuse length is 46 inches. but the build plans show the fuse length to be 36 inches. (5"/11"/20") im confused. which is it? i want to used a .60 size 2 stroke. it seems 46 inches may be more proper (7"/11"/28"). thanks in advance.

RE: SPADSTICK QUESTION

I think the rudder and motor/motor mount equal the extra 10".

RE: SPADSTICK QUESTION

I kinda thought that as well. i eneded up making the fuse 40 inches and the wingspan 52 inches. gonna reshape the stabilizers to be more like the original ugly stick.
bolt on a s.t. 61, paint it rustoleum red, add the crosses, balance on the spar and go for it.

Get the scallops in the ailerons too.  Thrill and amaze everyone with that.

I'm thrilled and amazed, maybe even motivated to do one.  I was going to do a Gnat.. Maybe I can Eindeckerize it.  The Spadstick looks like a better candidate.

A6,

Nice job on the build.. You'll love the plane.. I think a .60 is too much for the size of the plane, but you don't have to fly it wide-open.. Enjoy! Post pics and/video of the maiden..

Hi A6TEXAN
Nice job. Are you going to mount the aileron servos on the wing surface, partly in the wing, or totally inside the wing?

RE: SPADSTICK QUESTION

thx for the compliments fellas,
jimgee, i increased the w.s to 52" and the fuse length to 40". maybe this will help with the .60 size engine.
villa, im going to install a servo for each aileron, on the bottom of the wing. similar to most "arf" installations.
ill post more pics as i get farther in the build this weekend as the weather is supposed to good for building not flying.

RE: SPADSTICK QUESTION

Hi A6TEXAN
I have mounted aileron servos inside the bottom of the wing, with only the servo arm protruding. I usually cut thru the bottom surface on three sides and hinge the forth side of a 2" by 2" square. What you will then have is a 2" X 2" hatch that is kept closed with a bamboo skewer into one of the flutes, from the trailing edge of the wing. Try this on a scrap piece of 4MM Coroplast. I have posted this procedure some years ago here, with photos, if you want tp search for it. Makes a nice clean instalattion. I sand the Coroplast servo mounting surface, and also sand the servo, and use thin CA glue. I usually cut off the two servo mounting ears. I believe I usually use a plastic tie wrap also, over the servo, but I always wonder if it is needed. Let me know what you think.

A6 have you painted coro before with rustoleum and is it fuel proof? I hadn't thought of painting it before. Have you tried lusterkote on coro? A camo SPAD would be kool!

RE: SPADSTICK QUESTION

hey Shooter,
i got a tip from a friend to use the rustoleum that is "made for plastic". he told me it was fuel proof. i cant confirm it yet. i did get an extra long slim line muffler to use just in case its not. i think the longer it gets to cure before flying will definitely give it a better chance. ill be flying soon and let you know how it works out.

RE: SPADSTICK QUESTION

The regular old gloss Rustoleum is what holds up to glow fuel.  Scuff up the plastic, paint it and then let it cure for a couple weeks before you fly it.  I had a DPS that I painted camo and it held up pretty well.  When you clean your planes, if you scrub the plane clean with paper towel and windex, you can take the paint off, but if you clean it gently, it'll hold up ok.

It almost looks too good for a SPAD.  Only 5 months.  I have taken a couple of years to build a spad.  I think about it too much, and change my mind.  A lot of people make them on a Friday night. (or Saturday if it is special)

Hi,
Having built several of these over the years I think your 60 will be great. We usually had to add quite a bit of nose weight anyhow.
I extended the nose 2" for my 2 cycle 40s
Personally I still have not found a good "coro paint". I just swip a sign of the right color[:-][>:]:D

finally flew the aircraft today. excellent flights. only 2 clicks of down elevator trim and 1 click right aileron and she flew hands off. had a funny tail waggle that i didnt like though. could have just been the windy day. i find out on a calm day. :D

Congrats. on the maiden flight !!! The tail waggle wasn't flutter was it ? With the bigger engine and prop wash produced, I've found out that flutter can be a problem. Try stiffening up the stablizer and vertical fin with bamboo skewers for extra support.

LOL im with ya Jim. :D
i have 4 skewers in each stabilizer. it definitely wasnt flutter. im thinking i should have made the fuselage a little longer, maybe at least 4 inches. it reminded me of my hangar9 corsair. you know how short coupled they are. other than the waggle its a keeper !
