What SPAD for a 25cc gas blower motor
 

Hi all,

I am in process of converting a 25cc Poulon blower motor to swing a prop and now need an airframe to run it on.

Since this is my first "experiment" doing this I wanted to build something cheap, quick and tough - so I thought..build a SPAD - it fits the bill.

I'm looking for recommendations on a plane with an 80ish inch wingspan that would be big enough to hold the 25cc engine.

Has anyone put a conversion gas engine on a SPAD? Pictures would be cool if anyone has any.

Any help/guidance would be appreciated -

Scott, give this link a try ... there is a very cool gasser with plans on the SPAS TO THE BONE website.
This one is on my soon to build list too. :D Already have a converted 43cc Robin engine ready to go :D

I built the USS (see attached photos) with only a few mods and it came out to be 16.5 lbs. Of course, I'm not a very lite builder either. It flys very slow with my 31cc Ryobi conversion, a 45cc is better suited for this plane IMHO.

I just got a 25cc snapper blower engine that I want to put on the front of a SPAD also. How hard is it to convert these things to swing a prop? Links please.

How could you reduce the weight of your build? What made is so heavy.

I'm concerned about putting a 25cc engine on a 16 lb plane....

Can you go with 2 mm coroplast to lighten?

What did you use for the Fuse - the 4" gutter pipe.

I followed the plans for the most part on the [link=http://www.spadtothebone.com/SPAD/ultraspadstick/]USS[/link]. I used the woodpecker/poly glue technique for adhering everything, instead of CA. My engine firewall, and landing gear block on the inside of fuse is made from 1/2" oak ply (not very light). I also used hardwood ( a scrap piece of cherry I had on hand) for the forward wing attachment block with (epoxied in) brass 1/4-20 inserts to screw the wing bolts into. I don't think using 2mil will gain you a lot, as far as weight reduction goes, so I have read in other threads. As I suggested before, Chris' 25cc Stick design would probably be the best match for the engine you have.

Forgot to mention, after the slow maiden flight of the 16.5 lbs. USS, I changed the prop to a 18X8 Zinger instead of the 18X6 MAS, that was on it, and tweaked with the needles which gave me about 700 more rpm. It flies a lot better now, (still trainer like) but rolls, loops, stall turns, and inverted flight can be done now with a lot more ease.
