unsure which spad to build for second plane?
 

right ive had lots of advice on spads from guys on her and now im unsure which one to build.im ready to move on from my trainer and want a second plane!!.some say the dps is a good one ,but im thinking id maybe like a funfly type,some say a qhor is a good one i also like the edge 540 i know its slightly more complicated to build but thats not a problem having scratch built planes b4.so all im asking is which one should i build?,is the edge a good second plane?im looking for something that will fly like a normal plane with hovering capabilitys too.help!!!!also the engine is an os46lawould this be ok ? i realise it maybe wont hover the edge too well but till i get something with more power would this engine be ok?.

If you're determined to stick with the OS 46 LA, you might be a tad disappointed with the EDGE 540. Looking at the plans shows an AUW of 4 lbs 11 oz. I had a plane that weghed in at 4-13. The OS 46 LA with an 11x5 APC prop at full throttle would pull the plane vertical all day, and it was fun to fly, but forget any kind of 3D performance, which is really what the EDGE 540 is designed for. I also expect its a much more advanced flyer. For a second plane, the 46 LA would work great on a DPS (Das PlaStik). Set it up as a tail dragger and save the weight of the nose gear. With the straight wing design and close coupling between the elevator and the wing, you'll find this to be a handfull to fly, but within your capabilites if you've been flying solo for a couple months. Get good with the DPS, and then build the Edge 540. You'll probably have enough plastic left over anyway! When you're ready to build the 540, buy a Thunder Tiger Pro 46. You'll be much happier.

thanks for that ive heard good things about the dps and i was allready thinking about building it but i fancy something i can fly in a small area if needed have you flown the qhor?i was thinking of building it with a profile for better looks and stability!!.i also considered making it out of an oak stick instead of alloy!!and as i have wide oak boards i could cut it to have brackets for engine and servos would that be a good idea or not?.just an idea !!.

The QHOR or the Profile versions are indeed a handfull!! I have more fun flying my DPS than my PQHOR. After 10 minutes of flying the PQHOR I am exhausted!!! They are fun...don't get me wrong...but the DPS isn't as fatiquing to me!! My .02

is it just your qhor?or are they all like that:D i was told the qhor is easy to fly!!hehe.ive only seen one dps video has anyone got any more links to videos of one?.hell i might build all of em and give em all a try lol:D.still be cheaper than my trainer!!.

If it is too hard to get PVC downspout where you live then the Spad stick would be a good choice. I built one in two days and it flies great. It will do basic aerobatics and is very forgiving,especially on the landings.

SpadStick first then 3d. Your engine lines up better that way and things happen a little faster with a regular airplane than they do with a trainer.

right ive started building the dps im using 3 mil coro for the wings top and bottom with a pine spar !!im thinking of doubling up on the aelerons would this be a good idea or would the 3 mil be ok?.i also have some thin plastic sheets that i got for free off a display its about half the thickness of a credit card and i thought this would stiffen up the aelerons if i glued a piece onto the aelerons on one surface!!.[img][/img].do you guys think this sounds a good idea?.what sort of height does the spar need to be? im thinking 1 1/2 inches or thicker.

Since you live in a country where the metric system is implemented...yardstick spars are 27mm high. 1-1/2 spar would get you a pretty thick wing.

metric whats that:eek:?,so about an inch then lol!!.i was thinking of making it thicker or dont you think thats a good idea?.i thought the thicker wing might make it more stable and less twitchy.

A thicker wing will give you more lift, depending on the airfoil, but at the cost of more drag, making your plane a bit slower than with a thinner wing. Try it and see I guess.

Stick to the DPS wing....you wont be disappointed!!!! I accidently flew my DSP through tree branches!!!!![X(] Came though in one piece!!!

I would second the spadstick as an excellent 2nd plane...I don't go to the field without my spadstick. If you need a little more build info for a spadstick I've shot quite a few pics during the build of mine.

cheers max cool plane ,ive allready started the dps so ill stick with it now!!.might build the stick next i like the coro fuse idea !!.im building the wing as its made for the dominater as ive just got 3 mil coro so im making it in one piece !!.

heres the wing so far ive not trimmed the aelerons yet but it looks good so far.it only took me a cpl of hrs to build including cutting the spars on my table saw.the tail feathers are cut too,as ive made this all from 3 mill coro would you suggest i double up on the elevator and aelerons or see how she goes?.

If you 'axe' me i'll recommend SPA3DT.Make sure you build square tube version as when you will learn to fly IT you'll crash too many times and break channel right behind engine mount.Ask me how i know:)

heres the airframe finished looks good just need to fit the engine and electrics etc.i was thinking of making it a tail dragger di i need a tail weel or could i build some kind of skid?.ill be mainly taking off from tarmac or the beach.let me know what you think so far .[img][/img]
