Another potential scratch build subject

The Russian Bisnovat SK-1. A rather awesome looking machine in my opinion. Used by the Russians for the development of a high speed wing apparently. Not sure it qualifies as a warbird but certainly was used to develop warbird technology.

Jeez, you think the Commies could have done a better job of reverse engineering a P-40. It must have been developed by the Polish R&D division :D

Interesting canopy. Who cares what is ahead as long as you can see to the side? [X(]

Me 209, Napier Heston, sk 1. Looks like we need to make a prototype race class!!! :)

They stuck a "normal" canopy on the SK-2 but it kind of ruined it for me!

That would be fantastic but I don't think we have enough builders left to warrant such a class. Too bad really.

The Martin Baker MB-3 is quite possibly my favorite fighter of all time and I will build one eventually. Although it does qualify as warbird since it was built to compete for a military contract it was also a one-off prototype so it could race in either category.

Same deal for the Martin Baker MB-5 which is also a pretty awesome piece of kit.

Tommy has one of these already for racing. I think Steve Nickerson built that one for him bet I could be wrong. I know Tommy brings it as a backup, but I think he only raced once with it. I think the setup was a little slow.

Maybe this is the one? I have been collecting MB-3 info for a long time and supplied the documentation to a couple of California guys a few years back so they could build one for racing. I don't remember the name of the guy who built it any longer but he sent me a few pics of the finished airplane. No idea how competitive it was but it sure looks nice. To be honest I have visions of building this airplane in giant scale more than for warbird racing but I think it has potential for the latter if done properly.

The MB5 looks similar to a supermarine spiteful, (think of a spitfire with a mustang wing). Aparently it was developed as the spitfire wing had some serious flaws at high speed.

I know that "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder". The mb 3 has just never struck me as a beautiful aircraft weather it be from shape or function and the mb 5 just seems the designers ran out of ideas and used all the best parts from many planes conglomerated on to one airframe. Just my opinion.

Sorry, but if you are looking for honest feedback . . .
speaking only for myself: There's no "<span style="font-family: Verdana; ">beauty"</span> in this one - not in the eyes of this beholder.

I personally was looking for a prototype that would hide a YS four stroke. Not much on any kind of beauty, just functionality.

Here's a simple, fixed gear design with good proportions that would probably hide the YS. Just need to thin up that fat airfoil for going racing.

I had thought of doing a scratch built plane of the Miles M.20 since it could easily be made standoff scale with slab sides, foam wing, and a P-47 canopy. Plus, the yellow underside would be easy to see. I wish that Iwould have. I started on a Heinkel He100. It doesn't quite meet the requirements of the thread. I chose it because it had a lot of wing area for a 57" span. What I didn't think about was how big the fuselage is in relation to the wingspan and the 4" spinner. It now sits with a scaled up outline drawing, crutch made, and a foam wing cut for the past couple of years. My lesson learned is to measure everything before starting.

And this shows that anything can be found on the internet.
