ME 209 Silver Racer Build Thread
Well it is officially official. I have started the ME-209 today. Finally got most of the wood I needed. I have to go down to Ukiah to get the wood since there ain't much here in Willits.
Started the left wing panel. Simple enough, no major issues. One slight question is how is the best way to accommodate for the dihedral angle? I put a little angle in w-1, but was not sure how much so it was not much. I am used to the TF kits giving you a little piece of wood to use as a square to adjust the wing joints to the correct angle. This is my only question at this point. so far I am having a blast! :D Some video: http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_u...?v=8u-kwTJ_Ol0 |

Jake. Stop! Contact me before you continue. My wing construction is different then a topflite kit and there should have been a dihedral gauge on your parts sheet. Rib 1 should be set at 6 degrees dihedral angle.

RE: ME 209 Silver Racer Build Thread
Thanks for the numbers Tim, that was what I needed! Don't worry Buddy. I am not building it like a TF kit, I was just saying that I am used to having the handy little gauge. I gave it about 5 degrees, so I will add an extra degree on the other joint and call it good. In the scheme of things this is small taters indeed.

Well, too cold for me to go fishing so I decided to get back to work on the the 209, since I got the updated plans/instructions from Tim. Got the fuse a rippin and roarin. Alright Tim, what is the goop mixture you use to cover the plane to seal up the gaps and sand her up?

Well finally got some time and started back on the 209. Finished the work on the back end feathers and getting ready to finish planking the belly of the bird. Will finish the wing too, but I got kind of a odd twist thing going on on one of the wingtips since I worked on it last and am not sure what to do. I will make a video and post it. Anyways here are some shots of the feathers. They turned out really nice.

Finally got the push rod system set up. Made a minor modification. I prefer a dual pushrod system for the elevator and so I went that route. Very easy modification. Here are some pics.

RE: ME 209 Silver Racer Build Thread
Jake , You are also going to use the elevator tourqe rod as well ? I use it along with the duel push rod set up for security. I think in this situation it might be a little tail heavy [X(] LOL

RE: ME 209 Silver Racer Build Thread
No, I don't usually go with the torque rod too. I find that just the v pushrod does great on its own. Plus for some reason I like having independent articulation on each surface. Usually that is because I drill the holes wrong for the torque rod and they are not even with each other . I have done it in all my other warbirds and no issues. Well, back to working on the bird.
BTW: If there is room on the kit layout, I would cut about 4 more pushrod guides so that if the builder wants to go the dual pushrod way they are available. Better to have too many than not enough. ;) |
RE: ME 209 Silver Racer Build Thread
Jake that can be done for "About a Hundrad Dolla's"

RE: ME 209 Silver Racer Build Thread
Here is a video update showing the progress thus far. Also in the video is the wing issue I am having. any ideas/help would be stellar.

RE: ME 209 Silver Racer Build Thread
Hey Jake,
It's looking great. Sad to see that happen to the wing. Maybe you can cut sections out of the wing sheeting and then remove the twist, secure the wing to the building surface and then re-sheet as required. |
RE: ME 209 Silver Racer Build Thread
Jake, if your available next week while I'm vacation I could go for a long ride and come by and see if I can help with the situation?
Mark also had a cowl ready. |
RE: ME 209 Silver Racer Build Thread
Thanks Tommy, I do like how it is turning out thus far (minus the wing issue). Your idea sounds prudent.
Tim I would hate for you to make a four hour trip due to my screwup. Maybe this can be remedied over the phone or something. |
RE: ME 209 Silver Racer Build Thread
It's not a problem I was just looking for an excuse to go for a ride. I would really like to see how the wing is built as I build them a different way. From what I see in the video It looks as if the sheer webs are not installed In the panel that doesn't have the bottom sheeting on it. Is this the case or does it just look that way? Some detailed pics would be helpful.
