1-21-22 Eliminator Race Update

As of 1-21-22 the current purse for Gold is over $1,000 and Silver is over $500.

There has been much debate on how the purse monies should be awarded at the upcoming Eliminator Race. The plan was to award the full purse to the 1st place winner of the final race. However, due to the continuous debate, we will poll the final 4 pilots before the final race. If all 4 pilots can come to an agreement before flying the race, then that is how we will award the purse.

You may ask, why not change the awards now? There have been so many different ideas on how to divvy the purse; that there is no way to make everyone happy. So, by waiting till the last race, we only have to make 4 pilots happy. So, if you want your voice to be heard, as to how the divvy the purse, you must make it to the final race.

Currently we still have 6 teams registered for the race on February 19th. We need 2 more teams is order for the sponsored purse of $900 to kick in.

As of 1-21-22 we have room for:
6 more in Gold
6 more in Silver
7 more in RWYB.

If you have not registered, please do so soon. If you like, you can email me back and I will register for you.

Lunch has been confirmed… We will have the Hot Dog on a Stick truck. We ordered 200 Corn Dogs, 100 bags of Chips and 100 32oz servings of Fresh Lemonade

1-27-2022 Eliminator Race Update

We currently have 8 teams registered for the upcoming race. That means that the $900 team’s purse is now in effect. If anyone else would like to register a team and race for an additional $900 please email me at [email protected]. A Team requires 3 pilots; 1 in each class (Gold, Silver and RWYB). You cannot race on two different teams. Also, there is no additional entry fee for a team.

Currently we have 50 entries leaving the following openings:
Gold has 4 open spots
Silver has 6 open spots
RWYB has 5 open spots

Additionally, we have updated the software. It will now matrix a 12 airplane elimination class. 1st round of eliminations (round 4) will have 2 heats of 4 airplanes with the top 4 qualifiers receiving a bye. 2nd round of eliminations (round 5) will have 2 heats of 4 airplanes and the finals will be 1 heat of 4 airplanes. Details on this will be posted in the rules section of the website soon. It will also explain how team points are calculated.

Last Update Before the Eliminator Race

Weather Update: Weather.com shows that this Saturday will be 76degs and mostly Sunny. Windfinder.com show that the winds in the morning will be 1mph coming from the East (will be taking off with the course). The afternoon at 1pm the winds will be 3mph coming from the West. And at the end of the day the winds will be 7mph coming from the West. So, it should be great weather for racing.

Entries Update. Currently we have 52 entries (17 Gold | 15 Silver | 20 RWYB). There is still room from just a few more. So, if you have a friend thinking of coming or your on the fence, now is the time to pre-register.

Purses: Teams Racing is in effect. The purse is $900. Currently we have 9 teams. If you want to create a team for this event, please contact me before the race. Once the matrix is created the registration and teams will be locked. The Gold purse is $1,360.00 and Silver is $600.00. That is $2,860.00 in prize money for this event.

5 Airplane Heats: RWYB will be running 5 airplane heats during the qualifying rounds. However, Elimination rounds will be 4 airplane heats.

Qualifying fields: RWYB will be running a full 16-airplane field. The 3rd round of qualifying will be for non-qualified pilots trying to get into the main event. Once all 16 airplanes are qualified, we will suspend any heat race where all 5 airplanes are already qualified. Unless we get more entries, Silver and Gold will be running a 12-airplane qualifying field. This means that the top 4 qualifiers will get a 1st round bye. In this scenario, the 3rd round of qualifying will be a complete round with all pilots flying.

Schedule for the Event: With the current entries we will be running 55 heats of racing. This means we will have a full day of racing. The field will be open at 6:30am. We must start the Pilots meeting at 7:45 and the heat racing will start at 8:00am. Please be on time for your heat race.

Overnight Camping: Some have noted that they will be staying at the field overnight. You are welcome to join them.

Friday: I will be at the field Friday morning at 9am. I will be there most part of the day. Once the Tents are installed (most likely in the afternoon) and our overnight guests have arrived I will leave. I will have the sound system in place if you like to test or practice.

I am looking forward to a new year of racing. Let’s all work together to make this our best race yet.

Ben

Review | Eliminator Race February 19th, 2022

The opening Eliminator Race for 2022 boasted new features, namely, prize money for Gold and Silver, 12 airplane qualifying fields with 1st round byes for the top 4 qualifiers and new additions to the event staff. We are happy to report that all 3 features where a success.

Our new event staff members: Lionel was the man on the mic and he did a great job keeping everyone up to date with score times and position for each heat. Jeff, our score keeper was able to score most heats before all 4 airplanes landed. Jennette had the next heat staged, radio checked and ready to race faster than ever. With the work of these 3 we had pilots starting their engines as the last of the aircraft from the previous heat landed. This made the event run smoothly and kept the pace fast, allowing us to complete all 49 heats of racing by 3:45.

12 Airplane Qualifying Fields: This feature allows for the top 4 qualifying pilots to receive a bye in the first round and bottom 8 qualifiers to battle it out to make the semi-finals. This also added additional meaning to the qualifying rounds.

Prize Monies: Gold had over $1,000 in prize money and Silver was over $400. The real question was going to be how that money would be split, if split at all. The 4 Silver pilot decided to give entry fees back to the 4th,3rd and 2nd place pilots while 1st place took the rest. The Gold Pilots decided on 50% ,30% and 20% going to the top 3 places and 4th place got nothing.

As for the racing;

RWYB (Bronze Class) saw some really tight racing. The top 4 qualifiers were only 3 tenths of a second apart. Aaron Ammons took the top spot with at 2:30.20 and the bump time was 2:38.49 held by Ervin Myers, a 1st time racer. Aaron Ammons, Loren Uthoff, Tony Frackowiak and Tim Cardin all earn a 1st round bye. The Story of this class has to be Marta Morvath. She has competed in all of the eliminator races only to be eliminated in the first round in each event. This event she came to race. Her Husband upgraded her plane with a bigger engine and more prop. Now she is breaking out in qualifying. This race she qualified 9th with a 2:36.45. She won 2nd place in the opening round, 2nd place again in the semi-finals and was poised to win in the finals. Sadly, her rudder fin was damaged on the start table and was unable to race. Tony Frackowiak, the 3rd qualifier, took the class with 2:33.45 in a clean race.

Warbird Silver was another story. The top 8 qualifiers all have times under 2:00.67. Roy Andrassy (2:00.05), Gerald Meux (2:00.09), Tony Frackowiak (2:00.16), and George Reidenbach (2:00.24) got a 1st round bye. But it was Gerald Meux that won the class with a 2:07.48 on the final round. However, that final round saw all 4 pilots breaking out. Gerald, was last across the finished line. His raw time was 1:58.52. One item to note in this class was Andy McBride’s attempt to use a world models T-34 in silver. He ran a YS 80 with 40% nitro. This gave him enough to qualify at 6th with 2:00.36 but was not enough to battle the late afternoon winds, losing in the semi-final.

Warbird Gold had the most on the line with $100 entry fees. There were battles to be fought and lost in this class. Richard Verono took the top qualifying spot with a 1:30.05 earning him and Ben McBride, Ritchie Thorp, Dave Gardner a 1st round bye. But in the end it was Aaron Singleton, the 8th qualifier, winning in the finals with a 1:31.29. In the semi-finals Douglas Killebrew and Ben McBride where black-flag for a mid-air that both airplanes survived. In fact they both would have advance to the finals, however, damage to the wing of Ben’s airplane was found after landing. Doug’s airplane had no damage, but if there is a mid-air both airplanes are black-flagged. We must say that Doug’s sportsmanship was unparalleled at this event.

Teams Racing saw the ‘Sac Boys’ winning again. This time only one member, Aaron Ammons, made it to the finals in his class. However, as a team they were able to score more points than any other team registered. This shows that there are more ways to win at the Eliminator Races.

As a special note, we want to thank all the racers that participated in this race. Getting to the starting tables on time, retrieving airplanes when clear to do so, and working together made this a safe and enjoyable event. We look forward to seeing all of you at the next Eliminator Race on April 23rd, 2022.
