Looks like it will be a P-40 in the end...

Details man, details!
What P-40 to which P-40 from what origins?

Well at least you're willing to play.
Yes that is the goal. Still have a ways to go. Cutting the canopy and reshaping the cowl.

I need to correct the shape of the nose inlet a bit. But it is getting closer.

Super-Slick T-Gun!

Is this a Gold bird by chance? Hope you are not going to shelf the 190.

It does look like you are going to have to use a P-51 spinner on this mod ;)

Tommy_Gun 06-29-2010 11:43 PM

RE: What it was, what it is, what it will be..

Funny you mention the spinner.
After review of these pics it became more obvious to me that I need a spinner with a bit more diameter to keep the nose shape correct.
Thank goodness for light weight vinyl filler!

Not to be a party pooper , but is that legal for Sacramento? There was a thread a while back that experimental warbirds were not legal. I dont believe it raced at Reno either.

Here is the exact wording:

The only models qualified to be entered in a SAM Warbird event must be scale* models replicating heavier than air, fixed wing, piston engine powered, man carrying, fighter or fighter-bomber aircraft that were in production after January 1, 1937, or scale models of non-military aircraft that have raced in the unlimited category of the Reno Air Races. To “have raced” means that the aircraft must have crossed the starting line while participating in an official heat.Observation or trainer aircraft that may have been modified to carry a weapon in unique circumstances do not qualify as fighter or fighter-bombers.

Roy, BACK OFF

MONGO,
Already pre-approved by a CD.
It did in fact race at Cleveland and so it fits in.
Otherwise, I would not have started into these mods. So what then....you just want nothin but runstangs out there then too??
Kidding I know better, you at least had a spitty in the last race as well as the blue hawg.

Sheesh what're you? Jake in disguise? :)

RE: What it was, what it is, what it will be..

Sounds good. Iwas just noting that per the rules, it wasnt legal. It says only Reno Races and not others. I think the rules need a revision there!!!

I personally dont care as it is a Warbird so lets go race!!

I had a feeling T-Gun wouldn't start this project without the official green light since I shot down the use of the Martin Baker. I am excited to watch this bash thread, I just wish Tommy would have showed us the mods earlier in the build instead of just showing us now. Maybe you should get some pointers on how to really do a build thread from Ollie, he will set you straight ;).

Don't look Tommy, but I think you made Roy jealous. Maybe give him a few more pics to keep him salivating.

That appears to be Tommys ASM P-61. The Blackwidow is a favorite of Tommys to sport fly when he's not getting spanked pylon racing.:D

RE: What it was, what it is, what it will be..

That is my ASM P-61 Black Widow.
Due to damage from a runway incursion issue with a friends P-51 the P-61 is going to be bashed into an F-15 Reporter.

I believe the plane you are referring to is an ASM P-61 Black Widow. Tommy has two YS .63s for power and it has been his camera mount for all the air-to-air video that he has posted over the last two to three years.

P.S. Thanks for the compliment, Jake. I enjoyed watching your recovering thread unfold, too. We're still all waiting for that He100 build thread of yours! (Hint . . . Hint . . .http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...eeth_smile.gif)

OOPS Guess I was just a minute or two too latewith this post We all responded at the same time. Sorry.

Nice custom cowl Tommy!!!! Any thoughts as to how you are going to replicate the exhaust stacks??? Are you planning to make a fiberglass mold of this cowl? I like them nontraditional race planes! Speaking of twins an F7F Tigercat might be a great twin that has raced at reno... Keep up the good work!

Hey Steve, thanks.
By the way, it's my thread. So it's OK for me to do a little hijack.
Although, it is in the interest of showing folks another unique idea for a warbird racer.
I can't wait to see what one of these does with a sleek wing and a YS powerplant sized to the wing area.

That particular one is, for now.

There will be more.

I guess Tommy got the approval from the CD's..... I will research for next years revision of the rules and hopefully not have to change anything else. It's just like Tommy to push the rules envelope around.

Cowl mold was pulled off the plug last night.
The images came out better than I expected for a cell phone camera!

Nice job on the cowl so far. So now you can start mass producing them for those that want their very own P-40Q. Get em while their hot boys!:D
