"Big Pink" Foamie - 96 inches!!!
Hi all,
Just thought I'd show you what my latest project is.
http://home.comcast.net/~sherbertson/bigpink.htm
Following my 86 inch "Giant Delta" theory of ultra-simple foam giant planes, I designed what I call "Big Pink". Made of primarily Owens Corning Foamular250 "Pink" insulation foam board. Total cost of the airframe is less than $30.
Parts List (give or take a few parts)
1 ea - 1/4 inch piece of 5-ply (12x12 will make firewall and wing mounts)
2 ea - 6x24 lite ply
10 ea - yardsticks
1 ea - 2x8ft 1.5in thick Pink foamboard
1 ea - 2x8ft 1 in Pink foamboard
1 ea - Elmers ULTIMATE GLUE (Formerly known as Probond Poly-U) or gorrilla glue (just make sure its the brownish poly-u stuff)
1 ea - 1/2 round trim molding
1 ea - 3/8x36 inch sq hardwood (Lowes)
The wing is 1.5 thick, using 1/2 round trim for leading edge material from Home Depot.
I used a simple 22 inch hot-wire bow driven by a 6amp automotive battery charger with steel fishing leader wire to cut the airfoil (4 inches from the Leading Edge side and 8 on the trailing edge). Straight shot, from wingtip to wing tip (holding the bow bow chord-wise and running from wingtip to wingtip).
The inside of the fuse has 3/32 lite ply laminated from firewall to trailing edge of the wing. From there, I used yardstick for my tail support. Over lapped with about 12 inches from a cut yardstick over the top of the two.
The fuse is made from 1 inch foam (it's what I had laying around). However could be made with 3/4 inch.
The main spar is three layer yardsticks overlapped and laminated with an additional single yardstick in the center section layed flat.
The horz/vertical stab fin elev and rudder are all 1 inch pink foam.
The stab has a 3/8 hardwood spar from Lowes....like 46 cents.
Pretty much construction is simple....the way I wanted it. Cut shape and fit parts as needed.
Add an old converted weed whacker or chainsaw motor and drop in your radio..and go have fun!!
I have enlarged the surfaces from the original plans to get the most out of my 1/4 scale servos (make them earn the 28 bux I paid for them). Still keeping within the 1 oz per sq inch of surface. Design yours accordingly....or get Hi-torques at least.
I'll post more as I go....
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ASK QUESTIONS/COMMENTS!
Most of all....have FUN!!

Maiden flight
Maiden is planned for next Wed/Thurs timeframe....maybe even the following weekend 13-14 Sep.
This thing called "life" keeps getting in the way of my hobby...
I'll post full report, with pics if I can find a camera person, as soon as I can.
I gotta keep the excitement level up....heck...someone may get Big Pink2 up before I do...these things are so easy to build...

Cool
CrazyHerb,
I followed your first delta, and see you're at it again. I just wanted to say that I think it's great what you're doing. Sometimes we can get pretty serious here, discussing scale detail, fancy composite products, etc.. ($$$)
It's great that you're providing an alternative and inexpensive way to just fo have some fun and fly. And, it's also very cool that you're just openly sharing the information with us, for free.
The more I read about your projects, the more prone I am to do something simple like that myself.
Thank you.

"Big Pink" Foamie - 96 inches!!!
Went to home depot and got some of the materials. Couldn't find any 5 ply in the would section. Is 3 ply ok with washers on the back? Also couldn't find any lite plywood. If I sanded down on a planer the 1/4 inch ply to 3/32 is that ok?
The rulers I saw are different from yours, so I thought for the main spar I would use 5/16 * 1-1/16 * 7' pine. Thought if I ran the wing down the table saw at 1-1/16 depth at only 7 feet I could avoid splitting the wing in two which I think would add strength to the 6" on each end of the wing that the spar isn't running through. IF the wing was only 7' long would it get in the air? Any hints? For the ailerons and the stab spar how thick is that wood. I got two 1/4 * 4" * 36" for the ails. Is that too thick?(popular wood). Is lowes a department store or a name of a wood coy? Thanx, that's it for now!

Foam to the bone!
Looks great Herb. I haven't built your delta yet. But I took notes. I'll be watching this one too. Keep up the great work.

HERB...you have done it again...watched all the videos and it looked so smooth...the power looked good also....is it what you expected as far as flight performance??? What is your total cost at now for just the airframe???

I can't view the video... Get audio on all your .wmv files.
Tried RealPlayer, MS Media player, and QT Player.
Can you post a different format. How about AVI.
I was able to view the big delta wing video on one of your sites.
I sent you an email asking for your phone number. Like to chat soon.
