Quarter Scale Piper Seminole Project
hello guys
I have started the design of this aircraft model for the past 3months & have reached as far as all the necessary cad 3view drawings, 3D CAD wing sturctural & 3D CAD Fuselage exterior.
It has taken alot of digging to reach this stage as in the first case only rudimentary & distorted 3view drawings were available & so far no info has been forthcoming from the Manufacturer, so in the end the model suffered from that because i had to guess alot of profiles & sections. nontheless i was able to use many photos to get fairly accurate fuse sections etc.
Anyway this project realy got started, when someone asked me if i could draw up plans for such an aircraft, the piper seminole. Said that couldn't find no kits or plans for such a model! So Could I generate accurate plans for such a Project? well here are the results up to now. But anyway at what scale? that turned out to be 1/4 scale.
when i checked that would give such a model a wingspan over 116" quite a large model!
It would have to be able to be scratchbuilt from plans out of normal material.
oh, here are 2 pictures of the real plane

RE: Quarter Scale Piper Seminole Project
here are the first set of 2d drawings that i made in autocad. overall dimensions were gotten from the 3view drawings & afterwards i traced out the outlines from photos & scaled them to match the overall dimensions. the nacelles were much harder to guage.
once i had the side view & plan figured, i did the front view, it was important to get the fuse section good as this section would be used to generate all the other ones.

these are the cad files, showing the outer shell of the aircraft, minus tail units (still to be done) & the wing outer panel frame & inner panel.

thanks eagle 1. the program i'm using is VeroCAD v9.1 , european based program, akin to the us based mastercam.

RE: Quarter Scale Piper Seminole Project
right now im finishing out the fuselage etc, with the wing's design being finished. now i can use the volume info of all the parts in the wing to get the weight of the airframe.
but what is the average density of poplar liteply, birch plywood & the average for balsa?

hi,
mastercam is a real great software with all the bells & whistles to do good freeform design & has exceptional machining capabilities. Infact its machining package is its greatest strength. VeroCAD on the other hand main strength is its extended modeling tools & i find this allows me to do a bit more than mastercam. mastercam's most anoying feature is it doesn't have mutiple undo & or checkpoint options. this is a necessary tool for these software to have! thus i'll stick with vero for now. so all in all, each holds its own & has their strengths.
ps. VeroCAD has won many distictions & awards as having the best user interface etc..
oh yeah, these images are of work i have been doing on the fuse. 50% complete!

sorry chutt, this craft is in development to produce comercial plans so it would not be prudent to give material out at this point. but would you or anyone else be interested in it's plans?

RE: Quarter Scale Piper Seminole Project
finally all the major design work to the fuse & tail assembly is complete. it uses quite alot of lite ply in its construction, mainly 1/8" & 1/8" balsa skins.

RE: Quarter Scale Piper Seminole Project
so now the wings can be joined to the fuse & the airframe weight calculated. do you know all of this work is just to come up with a set of plans!
with this solid model of the craft i can generate a 2d plot views of each component & any assembly , thus getting accurate formers & rib templates & complete views of the craft from any angle.
yes this is the long away around to make plans, but i would say the main advantage is accuracy is a thourgh & complete design.
hope you all like the cad models.
oh yes the t tail posed a structural challenge. what i came up with uses a stab built around a plywood t frame that slides into the vertical stabilizer. this provides the alignment & strength of the assembly. it would then be glued & screwd in to the rudder to complete it.
just in case is there a better way to design a t tail structure? do you think this design is airworthy?

RE: Quarter Scale Piper Seminole Project
Here are Snapshots of the completed plans...
Aircraft plans has been designed to include the following
Completely 3D CAD designed thus all component/template/jig tabs contours are exact
nacelle includes servo articulated cowl exit flap for greater cooling control
nacelle servo tray for 4 servo's to allow throttle, Mixture control, Cowl exit Flap, & Inboard flaps
Scale Fully flying T-Tail
Drop in Gear mounting for Robarts..
Dicut jig tabs & "nesting" jigs during sub assembly.
Builds straight from building board
Accurate Weight estimations derived from 3D airframe model
Scale Slotted flap design
pattern making templates for vacuforming windsheild
plus lots more...
You can always pm if you want more info...

Thanks.... the Design was finished a few months ago, it only when i saw actual pics of the first builder's airframe being glued together that I decided to post a few pics of the CAD & blueprint snapshots.
