RE: Foam Strikemaster
I only have the one Patriot XL kit. I'll mull the thought of selling it over a bit and let you know.
I do have 2 NIB Patriot 40's I may want to get rid of one of those...or make them into a twin (zoom!)
I'm going to start pulling kits out of the attic this week. I'll let you know what I have first...

RE: Foam Strikemaster
I am enclosing some photos of my Strikemaster that was built in 1996, 13 years ago and still going strong. These photos were taken a few years back and now we have estimated the model has between 400 and 600 flights. In that time, no accidents, no damage and very few bad landings. It has worn out a couple of sets of wheels and now on its second motor,a ASP.Magnum 46. A little hanger rash and a stress crack here and there. The model is finished in quality auto enamel.
The Strikemaster is a classic and if Jim Newman is still with us, I would like to thank him for designing an outstanding model.
I built the first one from a Midwest kit and eventually sold that one and built the one shown from RCM plan. Unlike modern ARF that are built light and get daggy with little use, my model was finished the old fashioned way, doped tissue over the bare wood. undercoat filler, lots of sanding and then one coat of colour. They turn out heavy but fly very smooth and fast and like all Strikemasters, land at walking pace.
I'm well past the "Bibical three score and ten years", and after assembling and flying ARFs for the last 10 or so years decided to go back to scratch building. Firstly a UltraSport 60 and then a UltraSport/Cutlass with retracts. I found out I was making lots more mistakes than years back and taking lots of time rectifying them, so decided to build another Strikemaster. I took my time just to see if I could go without any mistakes, but no, they still happen. However the Strikemaster turned out OK and it flies very good, fast, smooth and precise, with a OS. 55. a little heavier than the original at almost 7 lb. all up using JR Spektrum with LiFe Rx.power.It has wider ailerons, no reason, probably a measuring mistake, and a different fin shape. It is surprising how the shape of the fin appears to lengthen the dumpy fuselage.
I'll send some more phots of the old and the new together.

Excellent plane there, misterv
Looking forward to more pictures of your Strikemasters
Man, I love that plane
Don
PS: Jim Newman IS still with us. We got permission from him to blow up the plans for the "Super" Strikemaster. Pete sent him the thread link and photos. He is proud that people enjoy his design all these years later.

RE: Foam Strikemaster
I am attatching more photos of my pair of Strikemasters. The one with ordanance is 13 years old with over 400 flights and no damage. This is an example of the longevity of a well built scatch model outlasting today's ARF that look grottty after a few flights.
The other is a new build with a OS 55 for power and although with a much lighter wing, both came out quite heavy at 6 lb.10 oz. AUW. The performance is almost identical, both fast, smooth and precise with spot on landings the norm. On the latest one I used double sided tape adhesive on the foam producing a much lighter wing, the original used Sorgum glue. Roll rate is much faster with this wing although I arrange the trim on both models so that flying remains identical.
The Strikemaster is a fantastic flying model as well as a good-looker and such a change from the lighter overpowered ARF's of today. A must-have build for the keen modeller.
Thank you Mr.Jim Newman for your design.

RE: Foam Strikemaster
Not too much to expand on this story. I remember seeing it always at the LHS 30 years ago. I came across this Midwest strikemaster on a kit website in the fall. The original owner had purchased the kit from Tower Hobbies.. All the original paper work was still in the box. I have the RCM plan at home, and was going to one day scratch build the plane when I came across this kit. I'm going to have to remember to trace the parts incase I want to build a future model.

JIm, I think that there's a story behind your tale. Care to expand on it? Alternately, have you found a supply of the kits?
Keep us posted on your adventures building it, or if you decide to sell it.

RE: Foam Strikemaster
I'm considering building the Strikemaster this winter. I never built anything last winter and I'm itching to start this kit. Seems like a straight forward build.

RE: Foam Strikemaster
I've been asked by a few builders for wings and a short kit for the 125% Strikemaster. I'll work on it pretty soon here. Already have the 100% in CAD, so enlarging will be no issue.
I'll keep you all posted...

RE: Foam Strikemaster
Jim, trust me, you want to build this one. It's definately not like all the cookie cutter planes you come across these days. It was before turbines and ducted fans, but will swear it flies like a jet, with the right engine. That plane is why I got back into r/c after a 25 year layoff. I'm dying to find one, either a kit or already built. { keep me in mind } Enjoy it once you get her built. I would love to see pictures of the build !!!
