Default 1/3 Scale WACO YMF-5 Plans or Kit

I am interested in building a big 1/3 scale WACO YMF-5 and using the RCS 215 radial engine. I see that Proctor and Genesis each have a kit. I prefer to scratch build it from plans but I am still open to the kit. Does anyone know if plans exits for this plane? I see that Dario Brisighella has 1/3 scale plans for the WACO-ARE but I prefer the open cockpit model YMF-5. One option is to use Jim Pepino 1/4 scale planes and blow them up. Has anyone used Jim Pepino plans?

With regards to kits, I see that there is a lot of info in the Genesis kt including the full assembly manual on-line. They even have construction photos at various stages. Does anyone have any experance with the Proctor Kit? It looks like it comes out lighter but the extra weight of the Genesis kit should not effect the way it fly's. One nice feature that is on the Genesis kit is the plug in stab. I am not sure if this is in the Proctor kit. I need to remove the stab if I want to get it out of my basement workshop ha ha.

Thanks for your help.

Lou,I do not have any experience with those companies, but in the past i have called different manufactuers and they sold me the plans.I would be interested in a 1/3 rd waco myself.I have the plans for the 1/4 scale from Scale Plans and Photo Service, one suggestion would be to call them and see if they would scale it up for you.Be prepared to pay a hefty price though, that plane in 1/3rd will take alot of paper!,,,Slade

Thanks for your reply. That is a good point. I know that some companies like Balsa USA and Dynaflite will sell plans to their kits. I will give Proctor and Genisis a try but I don't hold out too much hope. Since it is a current kit they may be reluctant to sell me the plans. I purchased Dynaflite PT-19 plans. The drawings did not give any patterns for formers or ribs. I had to take the small die cut diagrams that were in the manual and blow them up to full scale. It worked out good though.

I think it is Jim Pepino 1/4 scale plans from Scale Plans and Photo Service that you mention. If I purchased the originals I could take them down to our local blue print shop and they would be able to blow them up. They have to increase the size by 33.3% to get from 1/4 to 1/3 scale. Usually the plans are provided on sheets that are 34" high rolled sheet. The 1/3 scale plans would be 45.33" high. The largest sheet at the blue-printers is 34" but It would be no problem to tape an extra 11.33" sheet to 34" sheet after both were enlarged. It should only be about $5.00 to $10.00 a sheet.

My thought is that I may have more problems with sizing material. For example if 1/8" ply is called for then it should be sized to .166" which is close to 5/32 and 1/4" is about 5/16". Some of the stock sizes will be difficult to find so I will have to use my best judgment.

I have built 3 scratch built planes so far and I enjoy cutting out my own parts, but I have not given up on the kit yet.

I will give Proctor and Genesis a call tomorrow and let you know.

Hi Aaron:

I have been to the Genisis site before and they do have a ton of info about the WACO including a full assembly manual. I am leaning this way if I go for a kit.

Still checking on plans. I see that PICO made 1/4 scale plans. I am going to take a look and see how it will be to blow them up to 1/3 scale.

Lou,

I wasnt sure, so i figured it wouldnt hurt, lol. Good luck on the Waco, its a very nice plane. Theres a place in Minnesota that restores them, somthing like that. I stopped by, but they were closed. Kepp us posted when you start building it.

Contacted Genesis to try and place an order. It looks like the earliest kit I can get will be in late December. All the ones that are scheduled are being built as Almost Ready to Cover units.

I got my 1/4 scale Waco plans. They are quite detailed and it looks like it will be a lot of effort to scale up some of the hardware to 1/3 scale, such as the wing joints. It is still possible to do but I am now seeking out the Proctor kit. This kit is orderd from Germany. Proctor said that I could go direct and use my own shipping account. I sent emails to Peter Barth in Germany a week ago but have not had a repy yet.
