Default Horten Ho 229 Build

I have been posting pictures and answering questions about the building of a Horten Ho 229 in the thread "Northrop N9M Plans Availability" I thought I better start a new thread as I am adding more pictures of the build. For those of you that have not been following along, the specs of this Ho 229 are:

Version: Ho 229 V3
Imel Version No.: Im 6
Wingspan: 72"
Target Weight: 3.5 lbs
Propulsion: Two Electric Ducted Fans
Airfoil: Imel A004
Wing Twist: Imel-T002
Software Used:
CompuFoil 3D
TurboCAD 9.1
Maiden Flight Target: December 5, 2004

Complete coverage of the build can be found at http://www.bellimelgroup.com

I am two weeks into the build.

I am beginning to fit the engines to the wing. I have to cut some holes in the leading edge for the air intakes. For now I am working on the exhaust fit.

I am happy to answer questions, so feel free to fire away.

Jeff

Thank you all for the kind comments. I too get goose bumps every time I walk out to the shop and see this wing on the building board.

I am using GWS EDF-3045X4 fans and I purchased them from Tower for $16.95 each. I should have around 20 oz of total thrust from the two fans. We'll see how much I really get.

Attached is a picture of the roughed in exhaust.

Motors not engines. Yeah I'm being picky. Could just say ducted fans and not specify the source of rotation. Then I couldn't pick on you.

It's hard to believe that the aircraft in that picture is 60 years old. Thank you for the picture. I've added it to my documentation collection.

Latest and greatest pictures attached. The starboard servo is roughed in along with the linkage. The control linkage will be hidden inside of the wing. Both exhaust ports are also roughed in.

Jeff,

How will the control linkage be hidden? I can't picture it from that picture. [&:]

On most models the top of the servo and servo arm sticks outside of the surface of the wing and the control horn is attached to the outside of the control surface. The linkage, or the music wire that runs between the servo arm and the control horn is outside the wing.

On this Ho 229, the servo and servo arm will be inside the wing, mounted under the surface of the wing and the control horn is attached to the control surface like it is on a full scale plane (not on the outside sticking an inch above the surface). The linkage, or the music wire that runs between the servo arm and the control horn is inside the wing. When the wing is covered, you will not be able to see the servo, the linkage or the control horn. If you turn the wing on its back and look closely at the leading edge of the elevon, you will be able to see the ball joint connecting the linkage to the control horn.

Please let me know if it is still not clear to you. Always happy to answer questions.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the explanation, but I still don't understand the connection between the music wire and the control horn. From the picture, it seems the music wire goes straight for the control surface, with no horn, but I'm just having trouble picturing how it would work.

I appreciate your help, though.

I guess I can just wait for further build picture as they become available to make sense of it all.

I have some more of the fuse center section. RC Universe seems to be finiky about uploading. Sometimes is works, most of the time it doesn't. I'll just keep trying I guess.

Think I've found the web source of some of the pictures I have;

There are more. Use googles image search with ho 229 as the key.

Scubyfan,

Ahhh. I see what is throwing you....there does not appear to be a control horn. The control horn is built into the bottom of the leading edge of the elevon. The pictures shows the wing's bottom side. The elevon hinges from the top and the control linkage pushes and pulls at the bottom of the leading edge of the elevon. I'll include a drawing later and it will illustrate this better.

This did not take as long as I thought.

I glued the two wing panels together this evening. I have also included a picture of the elevon contol horn.

Next steps are to install the fans in the airframe, cut the elevons off and prepare them for hinging.

Carbon Fiber spars installed yesterday afternoon. I am getting ready to cut off the elevons after some more sanding on the wing tips.
