Hi Guys, nice thread. Here's a couple of pics of my Art Johnson P-38. Weighs 26 lbs. with Moki 1.35's turning APC 15-10's at 9500 rpms with a twin sync. Yea, its fast.....Still lands nice with no flaps because of that wing root thickness creating lift. Nice design. Thanks Art !! Have you picked a color scheme yet? Rick

I used a modified G I Joe made to fit. They can be bought on EBAY for 10-$20.00. Rick

Looks good. Makes me excited as I am hoping for under 20# AUW. Still doing mundane glassing, detail type of work..

The plug is complete, I am just waiting for the guy to pull the plug for me.. I think the holiday slowed him down. I used the century jet retracts. They make a set for this plane. They are $350 I think.

CANOPY UPDATE: The first mold for the canopy was messed up and subsequently I had to have a stone mold made. Downside is more money, upside is that I can pull as many as I want. So to help offset the costs of the mold and such as soon as it is all good, I will sell the canopies for $25. Supposedly this are coming out very nice.. I guess we'll see when I get them. I am developing quite a collection of molds with this build. I also have molds for the drop tanks. I am making 2 sets, one for static, and one for dropping. Mostly mundane sanding, filling, priming, sanding filling priming. It is taking shape and should see paint soon I will get some pictures up next week of the progress.

Great job brentp76!

I got to see Glacier Girl when Pat Epps first brought her home from Greenland to the Epps Aviation hanger at Peachtree DeKalb Airport http://www.eppsaviation.com/html/history.php She was in pretty bad shape but I found it fascinating to see her firsthand.

Due to the differences between the AJ p-47 and Glaicer girl, and the desire to not completely tear apart the nacells to match Glacier Girl, I changed the paint scheme to Skidoo 23 which is at Chino Planes Of Fame. Maybe I will build another P-38 someday and use glacier girl.

Hi Guys, for all you P-38 lovers out there,,,you might enjoy seeing the vidio of my Ziroli P-38 that was radar clocked at 130 mph last August at the Owatonna MN warbird fun fly. I have highly reworked Moki 3.6's with spark ignition on straight alcohol. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVpZGc3zT74 The Art Johnson P-38 ussually preceeds the Ziroli P-38 in the inventory,,,so I just thought I would show you guys where your headed......................Rick

The person that isdoing the mold for me says 2 weeks before the mold will be done and the first canopy pulled. I want to make sure that it fits right, and then I will get you taken care of

Hi Brent,

Are you planning on shipping Int'l too? If so, I could use one.

I have no problems shipping international, you just need to cover shipping. I was also planning on using on of the canopies to make an inner and outer fiberglass mold of the canopy for the purposes of making a canopy frame. If anyone is interested in this I could sell them as well, they would come in the shape of the full canopy and you would need to cut the frame out.

CANOPY UPDATE:

Okay I got the first run of the canopy and the shape is great.. the actual canopy is not ready, lot's of bubble in the plastic. The problem was the mold was not smooth enough. I will be sanding and finishing the mold to make another run at it. I'll keep you updated

Here are some pictures of the canopy, you can see the ripples in the plastic. Hopefully the next run will be better.

I am using 2 os 91 surpass II engines with 2 90 degree bends and 2 short flex pipe extentions, the muffler exits through the vent hole and is pretty much not visible. I did a lot of looking around and this engine fit with the least amount of firewall mods. There is really not a whole lot of space for engines. I wish I could have gone gas but there really isn't a good gas option for this plane unless you go with one of those BME 91 gas conversion but the prie is rediculous for those.

I pretty much threw in the towl on making them myself and sent them back to the vaccuum former after I sanded the mold down. I would imagine I will get the first couple of re worked canopies in a week or so.
