Took my Corkscrew out for some fun flying this morning with the local Dawn Patrol group in my club. With her handbuilt wooden airframe and OS glow engine, she stood proud in a lineup of electric powered foam RTFs. She still runs and flies great! A timeless classic. RIP Stu Richmond.

Tee Bee - the plane looks great! I flew mine a few times last year, the only thing I have to update is the landing gear. That wire one is not working out great. It's a great flying little airplane.

Have you tried the corkscrew maneuver, I have not!

RCFred, thanks! I have tried the Corkscrew maneuver a handful of times as well as lots of spin testing including flat spins. She winds up tight just as ole Stu described in the original article. These days, I usually fly her in a more sedate manner, avoiding the "tortuous" twisty stuff. I agree about the wire gear. I intended to upgrade it to something more sturdy years ago but never did as you can see in the pic. A bouncy rough landing will get the prop easily. It motivates you to put her down as smooth as possible. The guys at the field this morning liked the fuel "sight glass". With throttle management, I usually fly 8-10mins on the 4oz tank. I think I'll take her back out again on Friday morning.

After a couple of years of collecting cobwebs, I recently rescued the Corkscrew from the pile in the corner. I soaked the engine with oil to get her free again. I then set about to do some repair patchwork on the covering which was coming loose around many of the edges. Lots of my older glow models covered in Ultracote have loose seams and delaminating clear layer from the color. After a few hours of tinkering, patching, and installing a new receiver and battery, she's almost ready to take back to the field again! Looking forward to seeing this old gal take to the skies again. The wind forecast doesn't look favorable this weekend, but she'll be ready just in case. I sometimes wonder if I'm the last guy around still flying a Stu Richmond Corkscrew.

Tee Bee - I still fly my glow Corkscrew - I have not flown it much this year, but I like the airplane. The one issue is its small and I can't see it that well. Post some Vids of if flying if you can!

Great to hear from you, RC Fred! Sounds like we are a small elite group in this new age of foamy electrics. I’m hoping for the winds to subside enough to fly her again this weekend. Looks iffy. Either way, I feel good to have her back to ready status! She has a new receiver, so it will be a trim out adventure once again, like having a new airplane. 😁

I had a great time flying the old girl this morning! The refurbishing effort was definitely worthwhile. I shot some long overdue GoPro footage. This might be the only Corkscrew footage out there.

Neat flight I liked it. Looks like a great flying plane . Don't let that beauty set in the corner anymore.

It’s the Brazoria County Modelers Association field in Oyster Creek, TX near the coast south of Houston.
