Default Modified yf-23: WIP

Recently i've started working with CATIA to try and modify the yf-23 to appear as if it were made by Sukhoi. personally, i see similarities between it and the su-27. I want to leave the fuselage the same with slightly modified nozzles and new wing configuration with separate elevators and rudders.

However, i hit a snag in 3d construction. i CANT SEEM to remove extraneous material created with freestyle. the errors in the pick. Whats in black is correct, but the beige colored partly right at the the rear and corrupted at the front.

So i have half of the fuselage done and i need to transfer the wing configuration i drafted into this project and model/ attach them.

other pictures included for another project im doing "shamu" a scale model of the X-48b or soon 797. It almost done just last electronics and servos and landing gear attachment. no pics of that yet though

more progress. When i get the exterior modeled completely ill go into more depth modeling actual components like ribs

Cool project. I made a balsa chuck glider of the Y-23 a while back and found that the canted tail feathers caused a large dihedral effect that caused a lot of roll coupling with yaw. This can be countered with anhedral of the main wings like a F-104 Starfighter. I also built a balsa chuck glider of the fictional Mig 37B "Ferret-E" http://www.fortunecity.com/meltingpo...g-37b_48-i.htm and found that the angle of anhedral of the main wings perfectly countered the dihedral effect of the tail feathers so that there was absolutely no roll coupling with yaw. This really surprised me being that the Mig 37B is completely fictional. I'd have expected that it had not been tested for aerodynamic stability in the very least, but it flew perfectly as a chuck glider, whereas the Y-23 I'm sure underwent extensive aerodynamic analysis, but the my chuck glider had horrible roll coupling with yaw. I think anhedral look more menacing too. You'll have to experiment with a chuck glider of your own design to find the optimum anhedral angle to eliminate roll/yaw coupling. The Mig-37b's anhedral angle might work for you but the angle depends on the specifics of a design.

that mig 37b looks nice . looking back into my model the wind are angled down slightly. i love the fuselage of the yf-23 but i dont care for its wing configuration, so i am using a similar body for the plane with a slightly altered wing/elevator/rudder configuration so its similar to the f-22's but more so resembling the su-33 with forward canards as well that i have yet to model. in the end it will have similar control surfaces to the su-33 with stealthy attributes of the yf-23 and f-22

more effort towards the final shape im hoping to achieve then onto a more in depth developemtnt hopefully my catia skills will improve by then.

so i did a little more and did some mirroring to see how the end result will be and i like it. I can see all three inspiring aircraft. The obvious yf-23, some f-22, and some su-33. just need a little more to complete the exterior then off to interior design. Need to find a way to have it operate off one jetcat turbine

another snag. so i have the body and im ready to start modelling sections BUT i cant seem to find a simple way to cit out section with catia. i was wondering if anybody knew of a way to boolean the sections that would be great

so after two days of no updates i can say i finally have a little more progress. Wire frame that i can use as a guide to cut my wood.

currently thinking about modelling the plane in gmax which wouldnt take long because im better with that than catia, then testing the plane in flight simulator x or x-plane just to get some flight data.. idk?

WOW!!!!! something i didn't notice. WHILE looking at the guides i would use for blue prints i noticed irregular bend in my curves and realized i could use this section for air refueling.

of course, i wont use it for in air refueling for a model r/c. but it would be applicable in real world situations.

I see now that you arn't using the "butterfly" configuration for the tail surfaces like the yF-23 and the Mig-37B, but in my defence, I'm an idiot.

no i really didnt specify that i was altering the butterfly design, just that i was modifying it. i may have to follow some features of the mig 37 if i hope to achieve a structure with little to no 90 degree or acute angles.

i plan to follow the methods hpghost used on his RC F-22.

my current progress and his method are shown below.

thinking of waqys to run the craft off of one engine. most likely aa jetcat turbine. anyone know of anyconfigurations that may work or from other planes like f-14, sukhoi's or any planes with intakes below the fuselage

more progress towards the modded plane. Finally managed to get the cross sections displayed in printable form now i must translate them so they can be individually used.

looking over the 3d i have, i decided to back track and restart my progrss using methods recently learned. hopefully the project will be more accuratewith better features that originally planned. will work fast to get things back up here.

Nice CAD work! Starting off this way will lead to many other time/money consuming hobbies. I'll guess that you are already thinking about building a CNC manchine?

eventually, currently im just going to send the cross sections off and have them cut from someone i know.

progress on the cad model. i made a mock up jetcat engine from a side view. its not 100 [percent] because i couldnt import he pic into catia, think i messed up a setting, so i made it by eye. looks close enough to me.

experimenting with airfoils. trying to find the actual airfoil but may try to test my own drafted airfoil. very sharp point extruding from the lower end of an aerobatic wing

have to completely remodel the plane base around the wings. design should be relatively the same but the end result will be worth it
