What a great story! Thank you for taking the time to share it with us here. That's how I remember the T-50... As on Sky King, often landing on dirt airstrips or worse, and doing just fine with that.

Amazing how these experiences stick with us, and make impressions that last a lifetime. I had a few myself... Insignificant to most people, but very important and pivotal for me.
Thanks again.

PS> I can't post a specific link, but I remember that when I was searching Google for T-50 info, I read several stories from guys who flew the T-50 in WWII. All interesting, for one reason or another.

Hi everybody!

With the addition of the aileron control system here, all primary flight controls are finished. Still have to add the trim controls, and the chain drive parts for the flaps and landing gear, but that's relatively easy. So, here are a few renders.

With 4GB RAM on my system (24-inch, 3Ghz. iMac) I should be able to finish this model, at just about the limit of the memory. I don't know the exact "cutoff", but it should be around 10 million (rendered) polygons. Turning adaptive subdivision off, and avoiding displacement, has enabled me to get this far without memory issues. (I LOVE modo!)

Hi everybody!

Heading toward the completion of this project...

The first image shows an overall view of the exterior skin, now complete on the tail parts, too. Finishing that let me go inside the model and adjust some of the internal formers for a better fit.

The second and third images show work on the tail parts (lightening holes in the ribs)

The following image shows the instrument panel, which has some (red) starter switch covers, a "gang bar" over the magneto switches, etc., added.

The final image shows the work on the cabin door area. The door is only on the left side, so from here on, the fuselage ceases to be symmetrical. The skin is all sub-d, so it's been a little tricky around the cabin area... rounded corners on some parts, angled edges on others. but It's getting close. Once finalized, I'll add whatever slices required, and reproduce the fabric "sag" between the formers.

After reading the story of landing the T-50 out in the brush, I thought I would attach a picture my friend sent me of his Bobcat. Also the same photo after I "aged" it a bit.

Hi Paul,

Just a short delay...
As a result of all the communication between Terry Sullivan and I, I'm now re-designing and maintaining the site. ( http://www.cessnat50.org ) I'll be back to the model right away though, with some even better documentation. Latest updates are at http://www.mikejamesmedia.com/cessna_t50_13.html

Hope all is well with you, Paul!

Hi everybody,

I've finished the fabric "sag" on the wings and tail surfaces. I kept it subtle, because I'll simulate the fabric stitching around the ribs with a bump map, and that will act like an accent. (Haven't done the fuselage fabic sag yet, but that's next.

Hi everybody,

The last parts of the external (fabric) skin to complete are around the cabin windows, and these have a little patching left, before I can add the fabric sag, as I did on the wings. I've finished the cabin door skin and luggage door skin in these images, and am still working on the final details around the other windows. Then, onto UV-ing for two color schemes... the Army Air Force olive drab scheme, and the "Songbird" or "Sky King" color scheme.

After all this I sure hope someone will turn your work into something in 3D that actually flies other than in a computer. This is not only a work of love but a great resource what with all the data wrapped up in the one product.

Thank you, B!
Unless somebody wants to pay me what it's worth, which won't happen, this model is destined for two other purposes, both non-RC.

It will be for sale, to 3D modelers, on my site at some point, and I'm also creating images and animations for display alongside actual T-50's, in museums. It has been a huge pleasure to build, and I'm happy with what's done so far. Just a few more details, and then the "paint".

For those of you interested in the whole (lengthy) article, it begins on my site at http://www.mikejamesmedia.com/cessna_t50_01.html
Enjoy, everybody!

I look forward to the "virtual tour" movie take from a housefly's veiwpoint as it flits here and there though this from various angles once it's all done.

And here I thought doing a regular 2D drawing in CAD was labour intensive! ! ! !

In among the rest of your research on this beauty did you find out if there's any full sized T-50's still flying out there?

Hi B.

I'll be doing some of those animations, for sure, and will post a link here when they're ready. I'm almost finished with the last two "build" items, which are the cabin interior, and rivets... LOTS of rivets. Have to add some more around the overhead windows, and on the engine cowlings, then I'm ready for "paint". (images attached)

I believe there are fewer than 50 T-50's flying today, but more than that exist as "parts" planes. As a result of communicating with Terry Sullivan so much on the research, I'm now doing his web site at http://www.cessnat50.org/ and you can find more info there, on the "Links" page. Terry, who is in the final pre-flight stages on his T-50, is sending a new batch of photos tomorrow, which will appear on that site in the next few days. His is painted in the squadron colors of his father's B-17 group, (image attached, which is how his T-50 looks today) and that's how mine will be done too.

Mike,

The link you posted for the t50. org takes me to a "domain may be For Sale by owner" page.

Oops!

Typo... I've fixed the link now. Thanks for the heads up.

The movie here (3.5MB QuickTime) http://www.mikejamesmedia.com/modo_m...15b_rivets.mov shows what I've been doing for a LONG time... Rivets! And some images, to show the results.

Hi everybody,

Here's a not-so-serious animation of the build process on my Cessna T-50 model, which is now finished, except for texturing. (17.9MB QuickTime) http://www.mikejamesmedia.com/modo_m...equence_sm.mov

Mike,

Fantastic work. I can't wait to see the model in the Song Bird scheme. Are you going to animate the retractable landing gear for us ?

Thanks for sharing your talents.

Hello Zipman, and thank you!

Yes. Among a very long list of things I'd like to show in animation, the gear is one. I'm starting on the texture refinement now. Once that's squared away, (two paint schemes) I'll move on to the animation.

Thank you, Paul! I enjoyed the conversation too. I spent a couple of hours after that, looking at all of your fabulous videos.

Just so you know I'm working in the background... Here's a brief QuickTime movie of what I've been doing over the last couple of weeks. (3.8 MB QuickTime)

After a lot of experimenting with UV maps, I found that, for these markings, I got better results with simple planar projects on polygon selections. I do expect to use UV maps for the stitching and other simulated details though. Here's what I've got so far. Wings are next, which will be easy.

With the wings finished, all the major markings are finished. Only UV maps for stitching and dirt to go, so I've been doing some test composite images. Finally...

Yikes!

After adding only about 500k of UV maps, I'm running up against a memory wall, when trying to render this model. I've already deleted all the internal parts that don't show, turned off Global Illumination, and reduced some of the rendering settings. It's getting tight! Regardless, here's what I'v got now, with the proper colors applied to the bottom.
