Default Scratch Built Flight Box

Could not find much in the way of plans for a flight box, so I ended up building my own out of 10mm plywood. It's very basic, but it totes everything I need and fits in the trunk of the car with the fuselage. Posted a video in case anyone else is thinking about doing the same thing.

Well I tell you , You have done a great job. You have built a box that you like not what some one is making money on. enjoy what you have created.

Yep, you deserve a gold star And that was some excellent advice on fitting the mockup in your video.

I'd have likely done my own from a thinner plywood though. Something more like 6mm. Joining it would need to be done purely with glue and clamps due to the small thickness but the final product would be lighter. But there's no faulting your design or the process you went through to arrive at the final product. Well planned and executed.

Larry and BMatthews.... Thanks for the nice comments! And I was actually planning on building it out of 7mm plywood, but could not find any that had two good sides or was true enough to buy. So... ended up with the thicker stuff.

Planning on adding an electrical panel for my starter and fuel pump. Other than that, it is working out swell. Now if the winds would only die down enough to have an enjoyable flying day. Today was a major challenge in aircraft recovery!

Good point on the flatness. It's often hard to find thinner panels that are not warped to a prop like shape with internal stress. Not to mention G2S material. Stuff that thin is just assumed to be intended for attaching to something else where only the one side is going to show.

I've had decent enough luck using luan, sometimes called philipine mahogany, plywood. But the back side never finishes quite as nicely as the front. It's OK but comes out a different color.

Have you ever tried using Petite Red Mahagany Filler on the luan? It's a paste you rub on, wait 30 minutes, and then wipe off with a rag. You can repeat but once is usually enough to completely fill in the grain of the wood. After it dries, you sand and varnish. Man, does it make the luan look fantastic! I think Interlux might have bought out Petite. I used the stuff on a 22 foot kayak I built once. Finish worked out really well.

Finding good plywood is tough. I miss birch door skins I used to be able to get back in the USA.
