epoxy and blind nuts
 

I need to epoxy a servo tray with blind nuts in it to the bottom inside of a wing. How can I keep the epoxy from getting into the threads or sticking to the threads on the bolts?

Screw a candle into each blind nut so that the candle wax fills each thread, and wipe away any excess epoxy off the surface before it hardens. The wax will come out OK after the epoxy sets.

Vaseline also works but can drip out if your workshop is too warm.

I've also successfully just put a coat of oil on the bolts and, after the epoxy has partially set up, unscrew the bolts. If one give you a bit of trouble, just heat the bolt with a soldering gun and it will come right out. On occasion, I've even left the bolts in until full cure (overnight) and had no problem removing the pre oiled bolts.

I put small piece of masking tap on the back side of the blind nut and then epoxy the plate in place. The masking tape keep the epoxy from going into the threads. Then when you thread the bolt into the blind nut it rips thru the tape.

try a dab of Vaseline in each blind nut...it'll keep the epoxy out, and if some should force its way in it won't stick.

I agree with the tape guy. Another solution: leave out the blind nuts completely, mount the ply, drill and tap the plywood and put one (1) -- I mean ONE!-- drop of thin CyA into the tapped hole and wait 24 hrs before threading a bolt or nylon screw into it. Shazzam! Not recommended for engines, but will hold servos in place forever., and weighs less. JGO

I don't even glue blind nuts any more. I drill the hole for the nut one size too small and tap it in place with a rubber mallet. They don't come out until I want them to.
