Visualizing kit modifications
 

I would like to use CAD software to pre-visualize some modifications I have in mind to my current project that is being built from a kit. I don't have any CAD experience (yet) and I'm not sure what the best way is to go about doing this.

This is what I imagine the steps would be:

1) Scan the plans
2) Clean up scanned plans
3) Vectorize all the lines
4) Create 3D objects of all the parts from the vectorized plans
5) Make my modifications the the 3D objects
6) Render a 3D image

Is this how you guys would to it? I have so many questions I don't know where to start. First of all, what is the best way to scan the plans? Does Kinko's Copy Center have scanners large enough to scan the 3'x5' plans in one shot? I've already made a photocopy of the plans... Instead, maybe I should cut up the photocopy into 8.5"x11" (-ish) pieces, scan those in, and then paste together whatever needs to pasted together during the clean up step.

My next big question is what CAD software should I use? I have AutoDesk Vis 4.2 and AutoDesk Architectural Desktop (borrowed from an architect friend) available to me. I haven't tried them yet, so I don't know if they are the appropriate CAD program. Should I get other CAD software, like AutoCAD?

Unless they're complex modifications, I generally photocopy the section I plan to work on and break out the drafting board.

Having said that, I'm starting work on a new project and I'm having the three views vectorized at a new prin shop in Whitby (noticed you're in Toronto) as a starting point....CAD? I used to use Autocad but, am planning on using TuruboCAD simply because of price.

Hi Juice,

What you've described will work. However, the process isn't quick and easy, even if you're a CAD expert. If you're doing relatively small mods, I would just use modified plans and sketches.
