I have downloaded the 'Profili' programme and it works. Except that I cannot save my airfoil to a .dxf file because the dxf button is greyed out and inoperable. Why is this? any help would be appreciated.

It works on my version 2.0 just fine.

Oh, you need to "print" the file. Select the print option and then do the skin and spar things you want. The picture will come up on the screen and then the DXF button should be active. Hit the DXF and save where you want and then just cancel out of the print screen.

FWIW I like to set the skin to 0 and disable spars and stuff. Also because it prints in metric and my CAD thinks it's in inches when I import it the airfoil is HUGE. So I save the profili file as 20 cm and then resize in my CAD.

Hope this helps.

I find that all learning is governed by one or two magic sentences!

Thank You Bruce!

I find the profili freeware to be far too limiting for anything close to usefulness for printing foam templates. I like the "Profile" software much better for established airfoils. I found it for download at http://members.lycos.nl/franshop/software.htm since the original authors links seem to be broken. It worked really well when I designed an airfoil in blue fanfold foam.

Unless I am missing something in profili (well, the free version), the "profile" software allows you to create a template for a foam cutting machine that has station numbers, accounts for the kerf and wire thickness and specify the block of foam dimensions (plus you can do these things in English instead of metric).

I've found the above features in Compufoil but not Profili, has your experience been different?

My error. I should have made my sentences clearer that I was referring to Profile and not Profili. Profili may be great for designing an airfoil once you pay for it, but the free version doesn't work as well as Profile. It is still better than compufoil cause it is far cheaper though! :)
