here is my messa 109. I lofted a set of plans off of the model. plastic models do not fly, but what if you build one bigger? will be alot of fun. it is so cool.:):D[8D] all the best craig;)

It would crack me up to see about 5 or 6 of those doing combat.
Very nice work. I would really like to see one fly.

hi andrew
we shall see if it flies. I will post pic's of what happens good or bad. if I can get it to work I may do a giant scale one. of course it won't be that big. with a 30 inch wingspan it is useing a 4 inch spinner. all the best craig

Hi guys
I worked up a Fatty p-40 off of pat cherry's P-40 drawing. it is going to be a very cool bird. but I will admitt this is for display only. after talking with some of my freinds we all agree there is no way to get this in the air and down in one piece. it is a very fun build. had fun working up the plans. if someone can scan them in I will send copies to them. all the best craig

I think you underestimate just what sort of creations can be made to fly.

The first thing I'd do if I was going to try to make these fly would be to build them a little lighter. I'd probably also go with a carved foam fuselage hollowed out. Then, depending on the size, I'd either use 1/2 glass cloth and WBPU varnish on the outer side as a hard skin or if it was larger go with 1 oz cloth and epoxy for inner and outer skins to provide a sort of honeycomb cored shell. Or if it was small enough and electric perhaps even stringers and tissue like a big ol' fat rubber model.

The thrust angles and wing to tail incidence angles would require some playing around. For example, given the high thrust line compared to the wing I'm guessing that it will not need any downthrust. It may well require some UP thrust to avoid trying to tuck at full throttle.

And there's no doubt that with the extreme shape they would have anything but a nice axial roll charactaristic. I suspect "drunken" would figure highly in the flight reports..... :D

hello Mr, matthews
thank you for the input. it will be interesting to see just how these fly. good or bad. I am redoing the P-40 with a foam fuse. the Stuka is very lite at this stage. have not weigh it. just held it. so maybe I should go with a balsa fuse after all? decisions-decisions? why can't this be easy. [>:] :) :D. I will keep posting. I am going to see some friends tuesday, I will get there input. you all have a very merry christmas. from the oneill mad lab craig

hi all
worked on the tail today. to give you a better idea of size. the fuse is 30.5 long, the wing is 52 inches over all. so brushless is the way I am leaning the first time around. the p-40 for sure. craig

Unless I missed it no one seems to have mentioned the extremeeee short tail moment such a model has, that will be in my opinion the trickiest part, you would require very little throws not to flip the model around. In any case I would be happy as well to see one of these fly, would be interesting. good luck and keep on with good work.

are these kits, or are you scratch building them? I have never seen anything like them before.

RE: messa 109 squadron

Hi david
they are scratch built. I ran across pat cherry's webpage one night surfing. really liked the looks of them. pretty much a cool gee bee. had to try one. if the stuka flies I will do the p-40. craig

This has got to be one of the coolest build and fly threads in a while. I love it when someone accepts the challenge of walking down the lesser travelled path despite the note on the Olde Tyme map that says "Here be monstyeres" :D

Just remember to build in a way to adjust the thrust line quite a bit. You'll need it to adjust the pitching effect over the throttle range. The super high thrust line and low center of gravity means it's going to want to pivot the nose down strongly. If it helps it's not going to be far off the mark to consider this design as a high thrustline T tail flying boat where the engine is up on a high pylon. And look at the up thrust angles some of those come with. Having the engine at the nose will help but it'll still want to drive the nose over strongly at full throttle unless there's a significant upthrust to help deal with the issue.

Hi Guy's
I have a question. I am looking for a set of 3 1/2 inch tires for the stuka. the tire needs to be an 1 1/2 wide . with tread if possible? anybody know of a good set? it is really looking great:D.the wheel pants are 2 inches wide. so a fat tire is a must. thanks craig

ya know somthing they all look like variants of gee bees, althought they dont have the big fat tear shape fus. with a bit of carefull thought one could possibly be made to fly

Hi Guy's
I got the wings started today. WOW! I mean WOW!!:D. I am having more fun with this plane. it has just been a very fun build. every step brings out the personality of the plane. it is pretty much a gee bee. now for sure with the long wing. I have some flying friends helping me with the flying part. if it will fly;), they will get it to work. thank you for the input. it does help out. all the best craig

It is looking very good just like the old plastic kit I did as a kit.

Did you find some wheels ?

Are you going to do plans for these planes ?
I would love to have a go at one of these .
