Well after a year I decided (a.k.a. ran out of my own projects) to get back on this project and will be posting photos along the way. After staring at the fuselage for over a year while building a Giles 300 and Christen Eagle, I just couldn't figure out how to make the airframe look as good as the floats so it's time for new wings and tail featherers. Here are the photos of the Giles and Eagle that took me away from the Cessna.

The new wings and tail will be foam cores, I'm using the NACA 0006 airfoil for the horizntal and vertical stablizers, ordinates were downloaded from the net. The cores taper to nothing at the trailing edge to provide a thin edge when sheeted.

The tail plane parts are in the vacuum bag, once the leading edges are installed, the plane will go back on the floats to set incidence. When I installed the floats earlier, I had to make some compromises since the horizontal stabilizer was not square to the rest of the plane.

Working on finishing off the tail plane parts, the vertical stabilizer is about complete, still need to cut off the rudder. The horizontal stabilizer is little behind, making progress.

Hi Tony. Very nice work on the float setup. What is your expected flying weight on the plane and floats when your finished?

TOO MUCH!!!! All I can do is built as light as I can, what it weights when finished is what it weights, adding lights and pilot figures just adds to the count but that what Rudy wants. It will be scary on the first flight but there's a lot wing area, in my opinion bigger planes can handle higher wing loading without a problem. Rudy has a T6 Texan that weights over 33 pounds that floats like a kitten when the flaps are deployed. Here's a recent photo of the fusalage, almost ready to stick back into the floats.

The tail plane parts are almost complete and ready for fitting. It's about time to put the fusalage back on the floats. Happy Easter to all.

Well the tail plane is about finished, before I start the new wing a new work bench is in order, so soon as I can remove the plane from my existing workbench, the old one will go and the new 160" x 32" workbench will be installed, looks like this project will take a back seat again!

Well the new work bench is complete and time to get back to work on the Cessna. A 48"x48"X5" block of 1# virgin foam was ordered for the core, the wing platform is laid out and I cut a couple of sections tonight, I may finish the rest tommorow before Miller time. The entire wing will be skinned as one section to avoid butt joints and glass tape reinforcement. Both wing skins are glued up, that took several days of butt gluing and edge matching to get the 96"x 16" skins finished. This will be the largest one piece wing I have made , the previous wing was 72" for an Ultimate. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Well here's all that left of the 48"X48"x5" foam block thanks to my favorite foam cutting assistant, Debbie, my darling wife. Cores are cut and ready to be jointed. I also pierced a hole through the foam core for the servo and navigation light wiring. This was the finest block of foam I have cut to date possibly due to the time of year it was blown, May. I've purchased 1# virgin foam from the same manufacturer for many airplanes but normally in winter months, this is first time the foam was manufactured in warmer climate. Maybe I'll stock up.
The light is getting brighter, any thoughts on what I should charge Rudy for the project?

The wing skins are vacuum bagged ready for wing tips and leading edge, working on the navigation light mounting before I can glue the tips on. I used Gorilla glue for the skins, normally use Probond, Gorilla glue sets a little quicker than Probond. I was stepping and fetching this morning once the glue started foaming. Of the poly glues I've have used, Titebond works the fastest (2 hours in the bag), then Gorilla (4 hours in the bag), finally Probond (5+ hours in the bag). I couldn't find any Probond and settled on Gorilla glue, with a wing this size, I should have waited until I found Probond.

Thank's I need it. Yesterday I managed to crash Rudy's only flyable plane so I'm feeling real bad, I better get busy. Your 182 looks great.

The new foam wing is fit the the fusalage, I might be glassing next week!

Just found you post, thank you for it. I have been sitting on my Cessna 172 Hostetler plans for about a year now and your post inspired me. I wanted to do something different with the build and I think I know what that is now(Floats). I did have one question, with the detail that you stated that you are going to ad are you still going to use the G-38. Seems to be a little under powered.

AdSala, beautiful pics of your Cessa in flight.

I believe the G38 will provide sufficient power for this plane. It will not be the typical slam the throttle and pop into the air takeoffs that I normally see at the air field, more like advance the throttle, build speed on step, break the water once sufficient speed is established. Once in the air, I expect a power setting less than half throttle will provide scale like performance. Only time will tell!

Work is progressing slower than I like so I didn't get any glass work done this week, maybe next week, here's the paint scheme that we're looking at.

After an eight year layoff I decided to dust this project off. There only and 1/8" of dust on it. Will post progress later today.

The wing was ready to cut the ailerons and flaps out when I quit 8 years ago. I had made a sketch of the layout from the original wing. Of course I didn't write much detail down so the notes were a little confusing. At any rate I studied some photos on the net and my notes decided on a work plan. The flaps will be much like the RC Guts Cherokee a just finished. I made the template to speed things along, hey it's only eight years.

Once the shapes are laid out I score through the sheeting then cut the foam with a flush cut back saw. Here I am gluing the trailing and leading edges on before the parts are cut free. Once the glue cures the excess is cut off with the flush cut saw and sanded to the contour for wing.

I decided to drill the flaps before cutting the flaps free. I will be using 3/16" Robarts for the flaps. These are arranged in modified Flower configuration. I made the drill jig out of scrap 3/4" sheeting. For drilling I used a sharpen piece of 3/16" brass tubing.
