Default .40 size floats, how wide?

Hi all,

I am considering building some floats for may .40 size GP Cub. In looking at the commericially produced floats it seems most run in length from 33 to 36 inches for a .40 size plane. I don't, however, see any widths listed with these floats. How wide should I make each float? Anyone have any simple plans or dimensions for what I am trying to put together that may help me out?

Thanks!

It's easier to cover them if you limit the top to 2 3/4 inches, because that's the width you can count on from a sheet of balsa. Then taper the sides and the bottom (planing) surface is wider......surface area where you need it. These tend to run around 5 inches wide.

If you have any drafting skills you can scale this. Everything in these floats should be balsa except the bottom in front of the step can be ply if you are reluctant to fiberglass, and reinforce the mounting points with ply as well. WATERPROOF THE INSIDE because floats have a nasty habit of storing water and turning into a pretty icky science project...

Thanks Jim,

That is a very nice looking plan. Very scale looking!
