Kelvin has the first one off the line after serious mods were made to the original kit. Should have some videos of the maiden flight before the end of Mar. Getting close.

After the goose, what Conachen kit are you going to release next? Or are you going to release any of them at all?

Any update on this?

How does this bird fly?

I am looking at my options for future builds, and this one looks real promising.

I heard that Rich sold the tooling and rights. Don't know hoo to though. If it's true, it's a bummer, cause i was really looking forward to the kit going into production, and had even promised Rich i'd buy one from him once they were in full production with all the bugs worked out......

Beautiful, WoW, whatever superlatives you care to use. Thanks goodness there are planes out there that are not available to people with fat wallets and no skill. Peter

Lets keep it going and find the molds. Why doesn't KMP get them and build the Goose?

http://www.mastermodelers.com/ What happened to them?

The test flight didn't go well. Water looped on take off and went to pieces. Really would like to see this model made available.

Looks like this is absolutely a fine model.

A quick observation, about the design of the cowling and nacelle area, it's obvious that it doesn't represent actual "scale outlines," In that the cowlings are either oversize or the nacelles are smaller than they should be, compared to the lines and look of the actual aircraft.

This deviation from scale, was this deliberately designed in for the benefit of engine cooling?

I wouldn't mind having this model or kit, but I'd like an explanation as to why this area was changed? I would prefer the scale appearance.

Comments on that or anything.

Hi everyone,

I noticed this old thread, so I thought I'd shed some light on a new Grumman Goose I'm building.

At 1/5 th scale I am completing CAD drawings for a plan. As soon as it's ready I'll have it available from 1/6th - 1/4 scale also.

@ 1/5th scale dimensions:                        @ 1/4 scale dimensions:                     @ 1/6th scale dimensions:

Wing span: 117.6"                                         Wing span: 147"                                    Wing span: 98"
Length: 89.5"
Height: 19.8"
Width: 11.66"
Cowl diameter: 9.8"

I'll be laser cutting full wood kits in the future.

Prototype 1/5th scale G.21 Goose will be powered by two 7 cylidner Seidel radial four strokes.
I will start a new thread on this model as it progresses with photograps.

Forget fibreglass!! Wood is better and lighter

Hi guys,

Thanks for your interest,

Engine cowlings will be spun aluminium on the lathe (not glass fibre)  and scale retracts will be tig welded hand made.

1/5 scale version will be tested with two 70cc four strokes running scale propellers at a lower rpm. (A lot of power, however it will emulate the full-size Wasp Jnr 450 Hp 9 cylinder radials quite well in scale realism.

The model will be covered in flight metal www.flightmetal.com (real aluminium at 0.0018" thick)

Kit construction will be no more difficult that a ziroli plan and will be simplified where possible to speed up construction without compromising scale detail.

Overall weight will be targeted at or below 30 Lbs @ 1/5 scale.

Any suggestions ideas, additions or requests to the plan, feel free to comment.

Under 30lbs. possible?

I'd design one model around those gas 26's. Do the math and see what you come up with?

I'd be interested in knowing.

The "New Goose" and the "Old Goose."

Sure, I'll show you some cad work sometime soon...

As for the powerful Gas 26 cc two strokes, I originally planned the 1/6th scale Goose for those engines or the 35 cc  4 stroke 7 cylinder radial.

I've opted for much larger engines for the 1/5 & 1/4 scale being 70cc and 90cc respectively swinging scale props at low revs with the radial (for scale realism )   especially with the extra drag for water take offs. It's good to have extra power on tap, but you don't have to use it all.

The full size aircraft had nasty stall tendencies complained by test pilot Bud Gillies on  29 May 1937, but the NACA 23015 -> 23009 airfoil was already in tooling for other aircraft currently in production so Grumman adopted it for its simplicity and cost-effectiveness (not for aerodynamic reasons) , therefore as a result, the heavy aircraft required the wing tips to have wash-out  be built in. This solved the problem.

If I maintain the same airfoil sections in the scale model, (as I don't want to go sport scale or stand-off)  it may also require built in wash-out, which is why I will try to keep the overall weight down as much as I can without compromising structural strength.  Waterproofing will definitely add to the weight of the finished model, which is why I believe a full glass mold of this aircraft may be too heavy and will require much larger engines than saito 170's as described by the ill-fated goose at the beginning of this thread. ...However very nice looking aircraft though.

Foam wings? Easy way to get washout. Wing incidence? You can use any airfoil you want. Won't even be noticable if not scale.

Glassing the entire model won't add that much weight. "Onerbuilding" adds weight. You have the wing area and choice of power. I'd rethink the radials?

Building the retract gear is where you'll gain weight if you don't choose your material wiesly. Also the wheel well area has to be waterproof. Keep in mind, in the water, that area is under pressure because of displacement.

Retract outrigger floats! Got the mechanics of that down?

Very interested as well.
I typically make my sea planes pure water not amphibious for various reasons. I would be nice to have that option to put on a dummy wheel and leave the fuse completely sealed up. Additionally, as much as I love the sound and realism of the radial it would be nice to be able to put electric in her if needed. I am limited to sound reg's where I fly my big (1/4 - 1/3) stuff of the water here in Annapolis, MD.
Thanks for the efforts.
