RE: Brian Taylor OS2U Kingfisher Build
Hi Christech,
I wish I would have known about that event. I would have liked to have come down and watched (if the event was open to the public)... I understand that it's a Club event, but I've seen John's plane several times in real time, and on a special video that a friend made up for me...

Hi Bob,
I had advertised it right here on RCU in the seaplanes forums under the "John Nicolaci Memorial Float Fly". You will see some pictures soon in that thread from this past Sunday. Sorry you missed it but we will be having it next year so you can plan on it already.

RE: Brian Taylor OS2U Kingfisher Build
Flew the Kingfisher again for another four flights this past Wednesday. I am now using 1/2 flaps for take offs and full flaps for landings. The flaps make for incredible scale take offs at just about half throttle and "ice boat" type landings. Anyone building the Brian Taylor OS2U will be happy building in the flaps. This plane instills all kinds of confidence and I still cannot find a single problem in it's flight characteristics. Had the first failure of anything this week. One of the cosmetic float struts broke at the top. It appears the brass has fractured and I will need to use slightly heavier brass to correct. Most likely will add some gussets too. All in all not bad. The plane now has about 20-8minute flights on it and is doing great. I originally thought this plane could be a "white knuckle" flier and would go up just occasionally. Not so, and I can easily make it my every day flier. Thank god I've got that 2700mah pack in it!

Had a mishap yesterday with the Kingfisher. Might have hit something in the pond as I ended up with a 1" x 3" piece of the hull getting knocked into the float bow. Of course it's in the most curved area of the float. Anyway, it will get repaired and go back up. We are going to cover the bottom of the float with 2oz. cloth this time. I have put the link below for our club's float fly and you can see the Kingfisher flying in a good video. Jon, one of our club members didn't get the landing but it still shows how nice this plane flies and handles. I almost want to build another!

Main float is repaired and glassed with 2oz. cloth on the bottom this time. 3/4oz. is too thin. the repaint of the float is done too. I will be adding more scale details like grab handles and pilot steps. I will also add the pitot tube and some airbrushed panel lines. A few added touches over the winter so I can enter it in the local scale meet as a finished plane this time.

RE: Brian Taylor OS2U Kingfisher Build
Haven't posted on the thread in a while. I have started to add some scale details for a up coming scale contest. I decided to make some beaching gear for the OS2U to sit on rather than a foam stand. I thought the beaching gear would give the plane a good look. Thinking of how I was going to make up the gear I took a look around the LHS at different things and found a RC car rear frame that had the overall shape and size I needed. I took the part, added some styrene I-beam, some sheet styrene, and some brass tubing with cables and came up with what you see in the pictures. Still needs paint but I think the gear look pretty darn good for a static display. Instead of the gear being attached to the sides of the floats I used two pieces of 1/8 music wire fitted into the holes that were already in the car part frames. Again, not really scale but at the bottom of the float and not easy to see. I also added a radioman/rear gunner. My buddy worked him up and painted him. Looks really good. I will be working on hand rails, tie down fittings, and also some more airbrushing of float panels and details.

Ok, tailwheel is done. I used some brass and soldered it up. The bottom plate fits over the heel of the float and I used the rudder shaft pin to hold the plate in place on the bottom of the keel. I used just a simple piece of thin brass tube over the top of the float to hold it in place. After all, it's just for static so it doesn't have to be super locked in. The tail wheel is supposed to be a single yoke but I had the double yoke unit so used it. Made the bearing tube out of many pieces of tubing to make it look beefy. While it's not super scale after paint it will still add a little look to it while its sitting on the table during the show. More to come. Looks like it will all get painted zinc chromate. Looks pretty good sitting on it's gear!

Hey, thanks for attaching that to the forum. Maybe I can get some better video of it up this year. Got the gear all painted and done.

RE: Brian Taylor OS2U Kingfisher Build
You're right! I've got about 6 Vortac bomb releases so I think I can spare two for it. I will make up scale looking depth charges on the lathe out of some plastic rod. The releases need to be forward of the servo hatch but that's alright, I've got the room. I will need to go with a 7 channel receiver or trigger the releases with the flap servos. I'll have to figure something out. Worse thing is the vortac releases need to be pushed forward to release the bomb. Kind of a PIA for setup. Now that I'm thinking, if I drop the flaps that will mean the servo arms will be coming back toward the leading edge which would push the release forward. I guess it won't be that big of deal.

Think about it. A RC plane drops an RC torpedo. That torpedo races towards an RC destroyer. Then you trigger off some RC pyrotechnics and sink the destroyer! Then the RC fireboat and rescue boats come out. Then the wounded get airlifted off the rescue boat with a RC scale chopper. The chopper lands on shore and the wounded get loaded into an RC ambulance which races off to the hospital! We could get all the RC guys involved in one show! Sounds like Byron's old "Striking Back" LOL

Hey,
awesome pic, looks too good to retire. Are you heading out this way to see your friends on the Cape? If so let me know and we can get to the pond. I haven't flown mine yet this summer. I've been real busy with work and some warbird projects. Will be putting the Kingfisher back in the shop in the next few days to add some grab irons and tie downs. Then it will get some more airbrush work on it so it will be ready to go to the South Shore RC club's scale meet. Got a video of it flying so I can play it on the laptop at the event. Planes are supposed to be able to fly at that meet but they do make exceptions for float planes. I'm going to be going to a few area float flies with it starting early September trying to promote my club's float fly to benefit the John Nicolaci museum exhibit.

RE: Brian Taylor OS2U Kingfisher Build
Well,
The plane is starting to show some wear issues related issues, it will need a good going through to make flyable for more years to come. At one time I thought of using it as a plug for a Fiberglass version,, dreamed about selling short kits too, bu my fiberglass Fabricating skills are rookie level at best. There's another 2 day event in a couple weekend,, I'll get her ready for that, but the future is unsure.
I'd love to do another Cape trip, but it may be tough, Wife start a new job at a different hospital system a coupe weeks ago so no vacation this year, Kids, etc. Ya never know though
Good luck with your events(s)

Hi Bob,
You can go ahead and publish all the dates as they are all listed in Model Aviation. Our club's float fly is sanctioned and we are hoping for many pilots. It is a real nice venue and the pilots that came last year really liked it. There will be a full add in next month's Model Aviation and District 1 Vice President, Andy Argenio has a write up in his column. Hope you can make it to ours.

RE: Brian Taylor OS2U Kingfisher Build
Been flying my Kingfisher again getting any "storage" bugs out of her. Found a stuck valve and a big piece of crud in the fuel filter that was preventing her from coming up to good RPM when I took her to the pond last week. Got the tie downs, bow cleat, second false exhaust, chine rails, black float walks, radio man/rear gunner, and aerial all added for the scale show. Ended up taking second place to a super nice Ziroli twin Beech that also won best of show. I can live with that! My buddy who painted my Kingfisher, also took his highly reworked Kyosho Corsair to the show taking third place which meant two of the top three finishing planes were painted by him. It was a credit to his incredible finishing and painting talents.
