RE: Berkeley Sea Cat
For those of you who want to build a 'Sea Cat" I can e-mail you some nice digitized plans in .PDF format. These are the plans from the 1950s Model Airplane News. I also have the Custom Privateer (9 ft. span), Privateer (36 in span), Privateer Super 15 (60 in span), and a very nice Piper Super Cruiser (35 in span) with floats by Berkeley. All of these can easily be re-scaled to other dimensions if necessary.
Just e-mail me at [email protected] and be sure to mention the plan(s) you want and I will e-mail them back. No charge. Planeman |
RE: Berkeley Sea Cat
I have found a Custom Privateer and a Sea Cat in my late Father's collection. Both are in the box and look complete. I will probably sell them soon. Any suggestions as to value?

RE: Berkeley Sea Cat
Rufus,
I requested a set of plans for the SeaCat and Privateer sometime ago, but got no response from you at the Email address you show here, so I'm replying here on the forum. Hopefully you will get his message. If so, please respond to [email protected]. Thanks, Bob... |
RE: Berkeley Sea Cat
I can e-mail you - or anyone who wants one - a high resolution plan of the original Sea Cat, a 68 in span gas seaplane by Henry Struck from a 1950s Model Airplane News magazine. The plan is full size and in .PDF format. No charge. Just e-mail me at [email protected] and be sure to mention you want the Sea Cat plan. I will e-mail it back.

RE: Berkeley Sea Cat
I built 2 seacats many years ago. The first one in 1959 and the second in 1971, both from Berkeley kits. The first one had a Super Aerotrol radio I assembled from a kit. It had a Cub 19 for power. The second had a K & B 40 rc. with a Royal 4 channel radio I also built from a kit. It flew great and would do nice barrel rolls. It would maintain inverted flight but did not climb well inverted because of the thin undercambered wing. I have many pics of it and videos. It met its end at an Ace aircraft sponsered float fly in Higginsville Mo in 1990. I was showing off in front of the crowd flying inverted at about 30 feet when I decided to go upright by giving full up (down) and pulled out about 35 ft below where I had started. ie 5 feet below the water surface. I still have the pieces left. I have many still pics and videos of my Seacat. The stab was a lifting airfoil and I added elevators. The Cat needs no ailerons. It will do nice barrel rolls and banks nicely in turns. Because pf the thin airfoil and sleek narrow fuse it flies full out with the K & B 40 at about 70 mph and stalls (lands) at about 30 to 35. Because I did not worry about the wieght and pilled on many coats of Hobbypoxy paint. Covered with silk. If anyone wants to see pics send me an email at [email protected]. btw it won best of show at our Duluth rc club mall show in 1975. Any question about flight characteristics just ask me via email.

RE: Berkeley Sea Cat
ORIGINAL: Modocv1 Coos Bay, I would like to get a set of plans if you have some available. If so, are they ligible and fairly easy to read and most importantly, understand? I'm not a total novice having built several wheel types, but in reading comments by some of the builders here about the Sea Cat, I'd be a bit concerned about the plans readability. Modoc... I made up a new plan for the main wing. The fuselage is made up from a host of big solid balsa blocks, according to my kit. My (2nd) A/C never had a wing, so had to make up one. I think it uses a new style K&B .19 R/C for power now. Wm. |

You have cause me untold damage! I have at least five birds in build and am now out of control,[sm=bananahead.gif] again! As a confessed, addicted, old time scratch builder,(since the late 1940's) I am now in shock from a overdose of plans download fever and can't control myself. That site you sent us to is loaded, what a rush! I'm in overload and don't know were to start building. I love plans. Now, as soon as I stop slobbering ........................I'll say thank you I am delighted....Donny[sm=lol.gif] |

RE: Berkeley Sea Cat
I've been flying my "cat" for 40+ yrs. It is fun and very easy to fly. With an old OSMax .30 it is way over powered, but needs the power to ROW. Also found a 3-bladed prop helps with spray from the nose. Also found flying it with the wing floats and wheels adds a huge amount sof drag, looks cool but you got to keep the power up.
I've flow her from water, snow and grass. Always fun to do touch and go's from a smooth lake. Just go to keep an eye on the gas, as it is always a long swim to go get it when you run out. It's just a fun old model........... |
RE: Berkeley Sea Cat
Both kits have been sold to a collector. Thanks for looking and all of the stories about these great planes!
Dave I also have a JETCO original and in the box "NAVIGATOR" kit for sale if interested. |
RE: Berkeley Sea Cat
I have my Dad's Sea Cat - I remember seeing it fly at least twice - once lost in the top of a big tree.
The tissue is brittle, so I'm recovering with Ultracote. Also converting to Electric. I hope to have it at SEFF next week. Rick Nixon |
