Cruising through the websites here and noticed Lorne Hanson's 1/4 Cub (Vernon, BC, Canada) had a canoe mounted on the right float. I'm the the midst of a Balsa USA Cub and Sig floats. Bought a Midwest Indian Girl canoe kit; thought I'd enlarge the plans to fit 1/4 scale. Heap big scratch building project there, perhaps including steam bending ribs. Any alternatives?

This might be something Sea Commander might consider producing to augment their stuff.

You could convert it to a Coleman canoe, bend the ribs from brass or aluminum rods, and fiberglass the skin.:D

Skymasters RC club outside of Detroit puts on one of the best float flys in the country every September. A couple of years ao I saw an awesome scale bush plane that had the canoe strapped on one of the floats, and I believe that the model built by one of their members. You may have some success in getting information by contacting the club at http://www.skymasters.org/

Received an email from Mr Hansen informing me that the canoe was custom built by a local full-size canoe manufacturer, measured 31 inches long, about 5 inches wide. Which means that the Midwest kit, Indian Girl, will have to be enlarged two and a half times.

Anyone care to comment on the aerodynamics.

On those size floats and that plane I doubt that you would notice much impact on the aerodynamics, certainly not anything that couldn't be trimmed away. You don't plan to mount the canoe right side up, do you?

Heavens, no! Too much water sloshing about in there!

At the Western Canada Aviation Museum in Winnipeg there`s a Stinson Reliant SR-8 with an info sign indicating pilots` experimentation with various canoe mounting placements for premium aerodynamic effect. Fascinating! See the photo in the museum collection at www.wcam.mb.ca The canoe is tipped over at an angle, lashed to right float struts. Oddly, the flat Y-back stern faces the front and the pointed bow toward the rear.

Thirty-one inch canoe on fourty-six inch floats. That`s three-quarters of the float. Methinks I will need plenty of starboard down aileron.

You mean this one? It will be inverted, not flown this way. ;) 46" sea commander floats.
