i've had both and i like them both very much. the decathlon is does not climb as fast, and it is a bit slower than the cub......i think this is because it's a heavier airplane with the same power...

i had the same problem with the gears stripping, and i ended up installing a new motor and a new prop shaft. it hasn't happened since.
